Description
In the anime Transformers: Super God Masterforce, the character known as Great Lord Z or Scorponok appears in a significantly altered state from his previous incarnations. Following his defeat in the events of Transformers: The Headmasters, Scorponok fled into space and constructed a powerful new Transtector, a colossal robotic body designed for him to control. However, before he could fully utilize this new form, he was captured by the mysterious, malevolent energy being known as Devil Z. Devil Z subjected Scorponok to extensive brainwashing, effectively enslaving him and placing the entirety of the Decepticon forces under his command. After this process, Scorponok was reformatted into his new identity, BlackZarak.
Within Super God Masterforce, Scorponok, now as BlackZarak, serves as Devil Z’s primary enforcer and the most powerful weapon in his quest to create the ultimate lifeform. His personality from previous series, which was characterized by cunning, ambition, and a thirst for power, is almost entirely suppressed by Devil Z’s mind control. While he was once a master strategist and a manipulative leader who aimed to become ruler of the Decepticons, in this series he is reduced to a towering engine of destruction, acting with little independent will of his own. Instead of personal ambition, his primary motivation is to carry out Devil Z’s plan, known as Operation M1, which involves teleporting via artificial black holes to unleash chaos on Earth, targeting major cities like New York and Tokyo for annihilation.
His role in the story is that of the ultimate antagonist that the Autobots must overcome. His arrival on Earth signals a dramatic escalation of the conflict. Possessing a new, enormous body that stands 3000 meters tall, BlackZarak is a near-unstoppable force of nature. He is the final obstacle for the Autobot leader Ginrai, particularly after Ginrai achieves the form of God Ginrai. The narrative builds towards a climactic final confrontation between God Ginrai and BlackZarak on the Matterhorn mountain. In this final battle, Devil Z merges directly with BlackZarak in a desperate attempt to destroy the Autobots and complete his plan, but the combined might of the Autobots ultimately shatters their fusion and defeats the titan. In terms of relationships, his only significant connection is as a thrall to his master, Devil Z. He displaces other Decepticon leaders, such as the Godmasters Giga and Mega, as the primary threat, with all other Decepticons serving under his command by extension of Devil Z’s will.
Notably, there is no meaningful character development for Scorponok in this series. He is presented as a tragic figure, a once-great leader transformed into a mindless puppet, and he is ultimately destroyed in this role without regaining his former self. As BlackZarak, he possesses a terrifying array of abilities befitting his size and role as a planet-threatening weapon. His alternate mode is a massive, scorpion-shaped fortress bristling with artillery. His primary weapons include twin shoulder cannons, a corrosive tail stinger, and the Tyrant Spear, a powerful trident capable of slicing through reinforced installations. He is also capable of unleashing a devastating attack known as Black Thunder, which warps gravity itself to create destructive spatial rifts. Unlike his previous Headmaster configuration, this BlackZarak body is controlled by Scorponok from within the chest cavity, wired directly into the systems, with a separate decoy head placed on the body’s shoulders.
