Simon Broad

Description
Simon Broad is a New Zealand voice actor who has built a prolific career in Hong Kong, becoming a prominent figure in the world of English dubbing for Asian cinema and animation. Born in Pahiatua, New Zealand, on February 10, 1963, he moved to Hong Kong in 1981 and began working in voice-over for filmmaker Godfrey Ho. During the 1980s, he was exceptionally active, voicing as many as 170 films in a single year. By 1999, he estimated he had provided voices for over 700 films, including nearly all of the Hong Kong releases starring Chow Yun-fat and Jet Li up to that time. His extensive work led a South China Morning Post article to describe him as "Hong Kong's viceroy of the voice-over; the doyen of dubbers".

As the demand for movie voice-over began to decline, Broad, along with fellow actor Jack Murphy, expanded into new areas through their company, Two Guys. This shift led them to provide voices for animation, particularly Japanese cartoons, and for talking toys. Beyond performance, his career has also encompassed roles in business training and development. In 2008, he joined the consultancy Dramatic Difference as a roleplayer and facilitator, and his company, Bramp International Ltd, has been involved in global team development training for major corporations like HSBC.

Broad is known for taking on multiple roles within a single project, a common practice in dubbing. A prime example is the 1987 Japanese anime series Transformers: The Headmasters, for which he voiced numerous characters in the English version produced in Hong Kong. His roles in this series included the Autobot leader Fortress Maximus, the communications officer Blaster and his later form Twincast, the intellectual Highbrow, the powerful Decepticon Sixshot, and the treacherous Weirdwolf. He also provided voices for characters such as Blurr, Hound, Scattershot, Scourge, Skydive, and Slag in the same series.

Another significant entry in his filmography is the English version of the 1984 animated film The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?. In this feature, Broad voiced three distinct characters: Captain Bruno J. Global, the commanding officer of the SDF-1 Macross; Lynn Kaihun, the cousin of the film's heroine Lynn Minmay; and Hayao Kakizaki, a skilled pilot and friend to the protagonist Hikaru Ichijyo. His voice work continued into the 2000s, with a role as Sifu in the 2005 film Dragon Blade, on which he also served as an ADR supervisor, and a part in the 2006 anime series Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales. He has also been involved in the long-running series Chibi Maruko-chan, providing the voice for the character Tomozo Sakura.
