Description
Bruno J. Global, an Italian submarine skipper and UN Spacy officer of Italian ethnicity, rose through United Nations Forces ranks during the Unification Wars. He previously served under Takashi Hayase, father of Misa Hayase, during the U.N. Wars. Global captained the U.N. Navy submarine Marco Polo before commanding the UN Spacy Oberth-class space destroyer Goddard. While commanding the Goddard, he engaged and destroyed the hijacked sister ship Tsiolkovsky, marking the first use of reaction weaponry in real ship-to-ship space combat.
Due to his wartime exploits, Global was assigned as captain of the SDF-1 Macross fortress during its refit from the crashed Alien Star Ship 1 (ASS-1). As the ship’s plankowner, he oversaw its transformation and subsequent missions. During Space War I against the Zentradi, he developed evasion-focused strategies, often relying on tactical input from First Lieutenant Misa Hayase. A major crisis occurred under his command when the Macross’ omnidirectional barrier collapsed, inadvertently destroying a city in Ontario. This strained relations with the U.N., leading to the Macross’ temporary exile from Earth.
His leadership emphasized minimizing direct confrontation. A pivotal moment came when he approved the marriage between Zentradi defector Milia Fallyna and Maximilian Jenius, marking a significant step toward peace. In the film adaptation *Do You Remember Love?*, he debriefed Hikaru Ichijyo and Misa Hayase after their discovery of a desolate Earth and an ancient Protoculture city. Later, he announced a truce and military pact between the Macross and the Zentradi, though Boddole Zer subsequently broke it.
Personality-wise, he maintained an approachable calm and near-friendly relationships with his bridge crew despite high-stakes situations. Frequently seen lighting his pipe when nervous or contemplative, he was often prevented from fully smoking it by bridge officer Shammy Milliome. Another recurring trait was bumping his head on the low entrance to the Macross’ command bridge.
After Space War I, he transitioned to an administrative role in the U.N. Government, designing the Human Emigration Project—a space colonization initiative to ensure humanity’s survival against future alien threats. He later became commander of the U.N. Spacy, achieved the rank of full Admiral, and served as a U.N. Representative in 2014 before retiring. He married Miho Global in March 2003; it remains unknown if they had children or if she survived the battle against Boddole Zer’s main fleet.
