Description
Hayao Kakizaki, a Japanese U.N. Spacy fighter pilot stationed aboard the SDF-1 Macross, stands 207 cm tall with a husky build, short mussy brown hair, and a birth year of 1991. His rank fluctuates between sergeant and second lieutenant across adaptations. Known for his jovial, laid-back demeanor, Kakizaki cracks jokes and maintains high morale even under fire, driven by aspirations of romantic popularity and indulgence in hearty meals—his unrealized steak craving recurring as a narrative symbol. As the least skilled pilot in Vermillion Squadron, he frequently depends on comrades Hikaru Ichijyo and Maximilian Jenius for survival during combat.

In the original series, assigned to Hikaru’s Vermillion Squadron, Kakizaki participates in a pivotal space-scouting mission around the damaged Macross, resulting in his capture alongside Hikaru and Max. This encounter marks humanity’s first contact with the Zentradi. His life ends abruptly during a subsequent assault when the Macross’s overloaded barrier system engulfs his Valkyrie in a lethal energy field.

The film *The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?* shifts his trajectory into Skull Squadron under Roy Focker and later Max Jenius, adopting a casual rapport with Hikaru as "senpai." During an Earth-based interception of Meltrandi forces led by Milia Fallyna, Kakizaki’s underestimation of the enemy proves fatal as he is shot down mid-dialogue.

Video games like *Macross Ace Frontier* and *Macross Δ Scramble* cast him as a playable pilot, the latter incorporating a self-damaging high-impact attack mimicking his barrier-related demise. His Valkyrie’s color schemes vary between brown-and-white in the series and green-striped in the film.

In-universe tributes include *Macross Frontier*’s "Valkyrie’s Curse," nodding to his habit of discussing women mid-battle. Licensed merchandise featuring his mecha designs remains commercially active, sustaining his niche legacy despite his secondary narrative role.
