Description
Hone Banbara is a Mutant Robot, a type of transformed Neo-Human created by the Neo-Human Empire, and appears as an antagonist in the fourth episode of the 1973 anime Inazuman. His visual design is distinct and macabre, featuring a grotesquely swollen head that evokes the mythical nue, combined with the body of a skeletal ghoul where internal organs appear exposed. He frequently adopts a posture with his hands clasped as if in prayer and announces his presence with a characteristic, echoing cry of Bo~n Banbara~.
In terms of personality, Hone Banbara is depicted as a cunning and eerie operative. He employs deceptive tactics, such as creating an exploding skeletal doll that appears as a young human girl to lure his targets. His motivations are entirely aligned with the goals of the Neo-Human Empire, driven by a mission to cause widespread destruction. He shows no compassion or hesitation in his methods, treating human life as a resource to be consumed or a puzzle to be solved.
Hone Banbaras role in the story is as an agent of catastrophe. His specific objective is to trigger a simultaneous eruption of all volcanoes across the Japanese archipelago. To achieve this, he seeks to extract the location of the central volcanic point from a geologist named Dr. Tomishima, who has discovered that Japan's volcanic zones are connected. After failing to steal a microfilm containing the information, Hone Banbara kidnaps the doctor and uses his supernatural abilities to pull the secret directly from his soul.
The key relationship in this episode is his adversarial connection with the protagonist, Goro Watari. Hone Banbara directly confronts Goro and his ally Gosaku Marume, interfering with their efforts to protect Dr. Tomishima. He first battles Goro in his initial form as Sabugerman, managing to temporarily immobilize him with the curse of his Cross of Death weapon. This forces Goro to transform into Inazuman, leading to their final confrontation.
Hone Banbara possesses a notable array of supernatural abilities. He can drag human beings into another dimension and, through a curse, extract their soul in the form of a fireball which he then consumes, killing the victim. This ability can also force the victim to divulge any information they hold. In combat, he can detach and throw his own ribs as shuriken, wield a club shaped like a rib, and deploy a large, explosive cross called the Cross of Death. He also demonstrates the power of instant teleportation and can detach his head from his body. Despite his diverse powers, Hone Banbara is ultimately defeated when Inazuman escapes the trap of his hellfire dimension and destroys him with the Inazuma Kenpo spinning kick, a blow that causes him to explode and allows the soul of his victim to return to its body.
