Description
The Blue Knight, also known as Blue Bon, is a complex figure whose story varies across different versions of the Astro Boy universe, though his core role as a revolutionary fighting for robot freedom remains consistent. In his original manga appearance and the 1960s anime, his origins are deeply tragic. He was created by a scientist named Dr. Los, who built him as an adult robot named Blue Bon and later constructed two smaller sibling robots, Maria and Tonto, to be his family. The family’s peace was shattered when Maria married a human nobleman, Count Burg. The Count proved to be cruel, abusing Maria until she and Tonto, who came to her rescue, were destroyed and their remains were sent back to Dr. Los. Driven mad by grief and rage, Blue Bon attacked the Count. Unable to bear the loss of his "children," Dr. Los secretly modified Blue Bon to be able to transform into the forms of both Maria and Tonto. When Blue Bon discovered this, he felt like a freak, leading him to hate his creator and all of humanity. To hide his face, Dr. Los built him a suit of armor and a helmet, and he became the Blue Knight, vowing to destroy the laws that made robots slaves and build a free nation for his kind.
In the 2003 anime series, the Blue Knight’s backstory is reimagined. Before becoming the Blue Knight, he was a repair robot named Cobalt who worked at an illegal space-borne robot wrestling arena. Horrified by how the robots were treated as disposable entertainment by his human owner, Ham Egg, he tried to help the other robots escape. As punishment, he was jettisoned into space, where he was found by a mysterious figure named Shadow. Shadow erased his memories and rebuilt him into the powerful warrior known as the Blue Knight, leaving him with only his burning anger against human oppressors. This version of the character does not possess shape-shifting abilities and has no family of sibling robots.
Regardless of his origin, the Blue Knight's personality is defined by a deep-seated prejudice against humans. His past trauma has convinced him that all humans are cruel and untrustworthy, viewing them as a threat to robotkind. He is driven by the singular motivation to overthrow the established order where robots are subservient to humans. He feels little to no remorse for human casualties caused during his attacks and is willing to destroy any robot who sides with humanity, seeing them as traitors. Despite his harsh exterior, he is not without a sense of nobility and is capable of being humbled, as seen when Astro Boy sacrifices himself to save a human, forcing the Blue Knight to reconsider his absolute hatred.
In the story, the Blue Knight serves as a dark foil to Astro Boy. While Astro believes in the potential for peace and friendship between humans and robots, the Blue Knight represents the path of violent rebellion born from suffering. He is the leader of a movement, sometimes referred to as his knights or followers, and even founds a robot nation called Robotonia in Antarctica in the 2003 series. His key relationships are with his creator, Dr. Los, whom he despises, and with Count Burg, his family's murderer and the object of his revenge. His most significant relationship is with Astro Boy, who constantly challenges his worldview and, in many versions, ultimately earns his respect and prompts a change of heart.
The character undergoes significant development, typically moving from a vengeful extremist to a more complex figure who can see nuance. In the manga and 1960s anime, this change occurs when Astro dies to protect Dr. Los. Seeing a robot lay down his life for a human forces the Blue Knight to admit he was wrong, and he removes his helmet in a gesture of humility and apology before being killed by Count Burg. In the 1999 short film, Tome of the Blue Knight, he has a change of heart and sacrifices himself to hold up a collapsing building, saving Astro Boy and the humans, finally letting go of his hatred. In the 2003 series, after a long campaign, he comes to realize that a single future where robots live either with or without humans is not predetermined. He leads his followers on a spaceship to find a new planet where they can build their own peaceful robot nation, leaving Earth behind.
As for abilities, the Blue Knight is a formidable combatant. In his classic incarnations, he rides a flying mechanical horse and wields a lance or sword that can deliver powerful energy shocks. His most notable power is the ability to shape-shift, transforming his body to resemble his destroyed siblings, Tonto and Maria. In the 2003 series, he forgoes shape-shifting but is a super-powered battle bot with enhanced strength and durability, created by Shadow, and wields a sword-like weapon.
