Description
Kenichi is a recurring human character from the Astro Boy franchise, recognized as one of Astro Boy's closest friends and classmates. The character originated as one of Osamu Tezuka's earliest creations, first appearing in Tezuka's manga in 1948 as a character named Kenichi Shikishima before being adapted into the various Astro Boy television series and films. He is considered a member of Tezuka's Star System, appearing in multiple works by the creator, including the manga Lost World, Metropolis, and Nextworld, as well as the 2001 film adaptation of Metropolis. In many interpretations, the character Shunsaku Ban appears as his uncle.
Across his different incarnations, Kenichi is consistently portrayed as a positive, smart, and outgoing young student who is deeply devoted to his friends. He is characterized by his strong sense of loyalty and his willingness to stand by those he cares about, often acting as a voice of reason in chaotic situations. In the 1980 series, he holds the position of class president, reflecting his prudent and responsible nature, and is one of the first students to befriend Astro when he joins their class. The 2003 series gives him more significant character development, depicting him as an avid soccer player who struggles with a brief lapse in honesty during a game. This experience leads him to make a firm personal commitment to being an honest sportsman, demonstrating his underlying integrity and capacity for growth. He is also known to have a somewhat short temper, though this is balanced by his fundamental good nature.
Kenichi's primary role in the story is that of a bridge between the robot protagonist, Astro Boy, and the human world. He treats Astro without prejudice, interacting with him as a normal friend and classmate, and shows empathy for the loneliness Astro might feel as a robot in a human environment. He is a member of the Sky Riders group alongside Astro and others in the 2003 series, and he frequently accompanies Astro on various adventures. One episode sees him and Astro working together to rescue a mistreated baby elephant from a circus.
Beyond his central relationship with Astro, Kenichi maintains close friendships with other classmates, including Tamao and Shibugaki. In the 1980 series, he is shown to have a mother, father, and an uncle. A modified version of the character appears in the 2014 preschool-oriented series Little Astro Boy, where he is renamed Ken. This version is portrayed as an athletic boy who speaks in rhyme and slang and remains one of Astro's best friends.
As a human, Kenichi does not possess superhuman abilities. His strengths lie in his intelligence, his role as a natural leader among his peers, and his athletic skill, particularly in soccer. In the 1963 black-and-white series, a character named Kenichi is introduced with the ability to control plants, though this portrayal differs significantly from his more common characterization in other series. In most versions, his value comes from his courage, quick thinking, and unwavering support for his friends in times of danger.
