TV-Series
Description
Francoise Arnoul, designated Cyborg 003, is a core member of the 00 Cyborg team. Her background begins in France, where she was a promising ballet dancer with dreams of a professional career. This life was cut short when she was abducted by the agents of the Black Ghost organization, a criminal syndicate that forcibly captured individuals to be transformed into living weapons. Following her capture, she was subjected to extensive cybernetic modification, becoming the third prototype in the 00 series. She was placed into cryogenic suspension alongside other early cyborgs until Black Ghost's technology advanced sufficiently, meaning that despite having the physical appearance of a teenager, her chronological age is significantly older.
Francoise is characterized by a gentle, friendly, and polite nature, often serving as the emotional center of the team. She possesses a strong pacifistic inclination, preferring to reason with enemies and seeking peaceful resolutions to conflict. However, this does not make her passive; she will fight without hesitation when no other options remain or when her teammates are in danger. She often acts as the big sister figure, showing particular care for the infant-like Cyborg 001, Ivan Whisky, and tending to wounded comrades. Deep down, she struggles with her cyborg identity, feeling that her modifications make her less human and disliking the violence she is forced to witness through her enhanced senses. Her primary motivation is to stop the evils of Black Ghost and, beyond that, to lead a normal, peaceful life free from conflict and death.
Within the story, Francoise fulfills the critical role of the team's reconnaissance and support specialist. Her cybernetic enhancements grant her superhuman sensory abilities, including telescopic vision, x-ray vision, and enhanced hearing that can detect sounds from miles away, effectively making her a human radar. She uses these abilities to warn teammates of incoming danger, track enemies, see through structures and cloaking devices, and coordinate battlefield strategies in real-time. While not as physically strong as some of her male teammates, she possesses a degree of superhuman strength and agility, and is a skilled marksman with her Super Gun. She is also proficient in computer science, capable of interfacing with technology to track targets and analyze information. In some storylines, her capabilities are further expanded to include technopathy, sound manipulation, and, after having latent psychic abilities unlocked by 001, clairvoyance, precognition, and telepathy.
Francoise shares significant relationships with several team members. Her most notable connection is with Joe Shimamura, Cyborg 009, which evolves into a deep, romantic bond, though both characters are often portrayed as shy about openly expressing their feelings for one another. She is also very close to Dr. Gilmore, the team's benefactor, and often assists him with technical and coordination tasks. Throughout different adaptations, Francoise shows notable development. She initially struggles with sensory overload from her new abilities but learns to master them for the team's benefit. Her pacifist nature is tested repeatedly, forcing her to reconcile her desire for peace with the necessity of combat. Her personal journey often revolves around reclaiming her humanity and identity, moving from a victim of Black Ghost to a determined fighter who still dreams of a normal life, a conflict that is particularly evident when she is torn between returning to her ballet career and rejoining the team for new missions.
