Description
Chang Changku, designated Cyborg 006, originates from China and his background often involves a life of hardship that left him vulnerable to the shadowy organization known as Black Ghost. In the most widely recognized version of his story, found in the 2001 anime, he was a dedicated restaurant owner and skilled cook. A tragic accident occurred when a misguided attempt to perform a fire-breathing trick for his customers resulted in his establishment burning to the ground. Overwhelmed by despair after losing his livelihood, he collapsed, and Black Ghost agents took the opportunity to abduct him for their cyborg program. Other iterations of his backstory depict him as an impoverished pig farmer driven to the brink of suicide by failing crops and heavy taxes, with his attempted hanging being interrupted by Black Ghost agents who then took him into custody.
Personality-wise, Chang Changku is a jovial and friendly presence within the team of 00 cyborgs. He is a constant source of morale, largely thanks to his exceptional culinary skills. His hearty and warm meals are a way for him to bring comfort and a sense of normalcy to his comrades, who have all suffered greatly. He is often shown to be thinking about food, seeing potential ingredients in the most unlikely places, such as bats found in caves during a mission. Despite his often goofy demeanor and role as a provider of comedic relief, he possesses a serious and focused side, particularly when it comes to cooking. He can be a strict and demanding teacher when instructing his teammates in the culinary arts, showing his deep passion for his craft.
His primary motivation is a desire for a peaceful life, free from the control of Black Ghost. After escaping the organization, he often seeks to return to a normal existence, frequently by opening a new restaurant and working as a chef. However, the threat of Black Ghost or other global dangers inevitably calls him back to duty, and he willingly rejoins his fellow cyborgs to protect others. His role in the team extends beyond combat; he is the heart of the group, ensuring everyone is well-fed and their spirits are high. In battle, he acts as an anti-personnel and frontal assault unit, using his unique abilities to clear paths and attack enemies.
One of the most notable key relationships Chang has is with Great Britain, Cyborg 007. The two share a close bond characterized by a love-hate dynamic. They are often paired together for comedic effect, with Great Britain frequently teasing Chang, who serves as a serious foil to his laid-back attitude. Despite the banter and occasional frustrations, they trust each other deeply, and Chang has been known to let Great Britain help around his restaurant. In some continuities, a close bond is implied when an injured Chang is seen being supported by Great Britain after a difficult escape.
Throughout the series, Chang shows development by reconciling his past failures with his new identity. He uses his tragic past not as a source of bitterness but as fuel to build a new life, successfully establishing a second restaurant and even working his way up to become a wealthy businessman and CEO in some versions, only to give it all up when his team needs him. In the OVA Conclusion: GOD'S WAR, a version of him displays a more pronounced gluttonous side, and his abilities are significantly enhanced.
Chang Changku’s most notable ability is breathing intense torrents of flame. The temperature of his fire breath is exceptionally high, with sources citing figures ranging from 3,000 to 10,000 degrees Celsius, enough to melt almost any known material, including solid rock. This power allows him to easily burrow tunnels through the earth, create underground explosions, and serve as an effective weapon against enemy forces. His cybernetic body is also highly resilient to heat, enabling him to withstand extreme temperatures that would be fatal to an ordinary human. In the Conclusion: GOD'S WAR OVA, his abilities are further amplified to a form of pyrokinesis, allowing him to shape his flames into complex constructs, such as a dragon, to attack his foes. Outside of his combat powers, his most crucial skill is his mastery of cooking, which is integral to his character and his contribution to the team’s well-being.
