Description
Bonobono is the main character of the story and is a young sea otter who lives with his father in a home by the sea, on the edge of a sprawling forest. His early life was marked by loss, as his mother passed away shortly after he was born, leaving him to be raised by his single father. His name was given to him by his father, inspired by the sound of a stone being thrown into the ocean.

In terms of personality, Bonobono is best described as having an innocent, gentle, and warm heart. He possesses a deeply kind and honest disposition, but he is also quite slow-witted and has a notably vague way of speaking. His actions are often deliberate and unhurried, and his thinking is unique, leading him to be endlessly curious about the world around him. This curiosity is the driving force behind many of his adventures, as he constantly ponders simple yet profound questions about life, nature, and everyday phenomena. He is easily flustered and has a tendency to let his imagination run wild, frequently worrying about the worst possible outcomes for unfamiliar situations. A recurring subject of these worries is the Cave Man, a menacing figure from his imagination who traps people in stone boxes.

Bonobono's main motivation appears to be a simple desire to understand his world and find his place within it, all while enjoying the company of his friends. His role in the story is that of an observer and questioner, whose innocent inquiries often lead to philosophical discussions or humorous misunderstandings. He serves as the heart of the series, embodying a gentle, non-judgmental presence that allows the other characters and their quirks to shine.

His key relationships are central to his life. He shares a close bond with his father, who exhibits a similarly slow and bumbling nature. His two best friends are Porori, a timid and mischievous squirrel, and Nuburi, a short-tempered raccoon. While Nuburi often reacts to Bonobono's slowness with frustration and violence, the trio shares a deep and caring friendship. Another important figure is the wise Fishing Cat, whom Bonobono and his friends often seek out for advice and answers to their big questions.

Over the course of the series, Bonobono shows notable development. In his earliest appearances, he almost never got angry, and on the rare occasions he did, no one around him could even tell. However, as the story progressed, his personality shifted, and it became common for him to shout and react strongly to the foolishness of others, effectively growing from a purely naive character into one who also serves as a voice of reason.

Regarding his notable abilities, Bonobono is a strong swimmer and can dive, though he is noticeably slower on land compared to his forest-dwelling friends. Being a sea otter, he lacks significant subcutaneous fat for warmth and energy, so he always carries a shellfish with him. This shell serves as his emergency food supply and is typically stored either in his hand or in a skin flap under his arm. When he is thinking or trying to get someone's attention, he often taps the shell to produce a sound. Despite his generally clumsy demeanor, he has displayed surprising physical strength in moments of extreme stress or duress.
