Description
Nobita Nobi is one of the main characters in the Doraemon franchise. He is an elementary school student who lives in a typical suburban home in Tokyo with his father Nobisuke, his mother Tamako, and the robot cat Doraemon. Doraemon was sent back in time by Nobita’s future great-great-grandson Sewashi to help prevent Nobita from growing into a miserable adult who would marry Gian’s sister, mismanage his finances, and leave his descendants in poverty.
Nobita’s personality is defined by a cycle of laziness, procrastination, and poor academic performance. He regularly naps after school, wakes up late the next morning, and arrives late to class with unfinished homework. He often scores zero on exams and is scolded by his teacher and mother. He dislikes studying and lacks a basic grasp of many school subjects, though he enjoys reading manga. His low physical ability makes him terrible at sports, especially baseball, which frustrates his friend Gian. A frequent running gag involves his exceptional ability to fall asleep anywhere and at any time, earning him a reputation for napping.
Despite these faults, Nobita is kind-hearted, generous, and sensitive. He takes pity on stray animals and is quick to help others in need, even those who bully him. He occasionally shows remarkable courage in full-length adventures, risking his life to rescue friends or save entire civilizations. He also possesses a sharp marksmanship skill, excelling at light-gun games and using Doraemon’s Air Cannon with precision. His creativity allows him to think outside the box and use gadgets in novel ways, sometimes solving problems that Doraemon himself could not.
Nobita’s motivations are typically caught up in immediate desires: to get revenge on Gian and Suneo for their harassment, to impress his crush Shizuka Minamoto, to show off, or to solve trivial problems. He constantly begs Doraemon for gadgets, often with tears, and frequently misuses them out of selfishness or poor judgment, leading to chaotic consequences. He envies his classmate Hidetoshi Dekisugi, a model student admired by everyone, including Shizuka, but remains on good terms with him.
Nobita’s core role in the story is as the flawed protagonist whose daily failures and adventures drive the episodic plots. His relationship with Doraemon is the central premise of the series: Doraemon acts as a caretaker and friend, constantly exasperated by Nobita’s behavior but ultimately caring deeply for him. Nobita’s other key relationships include his childhood friend and future wife Shizuka, who encourages him and remains his love interest despite his shortcomings, and his two bullies Gian and Suneo, who are also his close companions. Gian is the strong-armed bully who steals Nobita’s things and forces everyone to listen to his terrible singing, while Suneo is the wealthy, cowardly snitch who often joins Gian in tormenting Nobita. Yet the four are frequently seen together, and in times of real trouble they support one another.
Character development in the series is largely episodic, with little to no lasting change between stories. However, the overarching premise shows that Nobita’s future improves because of Doraemon’s influence, and in the films he regularly rises to the occasion, demonstrating growth in courage and selflessness. Notable abilities beyond marksmanship and creativity include a strong moral compass, a talent for string figures (cat’s cradle), and an imaginative mind that produces vivid daydreams and even original manga stories.
Nobita is recognizable by his round glasses, yellow shirt, and navy blue shorts. He is an only child and was born on August 7. His character is considered a departure from typical extraordinary protagonists, as his flaws and modest background make him relatable to audiences, though he has also been criticized in some regions for his lack of personal growth and amoral behavior. Nevertheless, he remains one of the most famous and widely recognized manga characters in the world.
