Description
Emperor Darius is the primary antagonist of the anime Dino Mech Gaiking. He is the supreme ruler of the planet Zela, which is facing an impending catastrophic threat from a black hole that is gradually pulling his world toward its destruction. In response to this crisis, Darius orchestrates a massive military operation to conquer Earth, intending to claim the planet as a new home for his people. His background is that of an electronic supercomputer originally created by the Zelan civilization in their desperate time of need. To lead his forces, he was given a gigantic, powerful robotic body, and he later had this form covered with an imposing appearance featuring a red face, blue hair, and green facial features, often adorned with a black cape.
In terms of personality, Emperor Darius is portrayed as a cold, tyrannical, and pragmatic leader. He adheres strictly to a might makes right philosophy, believing that conquest and force are the only solutions to his planet's problems. He views emotions as a weakness and has no qualms about brainwashing portions of his own civilian population, converting them into unfeeling soldiers known as Dark Knights and the Dark Avian Corps to serve as cannon fodder for his war machine. Despite his ruthless demeanor toward enemies and his own underlings, his primary motivation is the survival of the Zela race, driving him to take any action necessary to secure Earth as their new home, which was in fact an ancient colony of the Zelan people from centuries past.
Within the story, Emperor Darius holds the supreme command over the Dark Horror Army. He rarely intervenes directly in military operations, preferring to issue orders or mediate disputes between his four direct subordinates, the Four Generals: Desmon, Dankell, Asmoff, and Killer. These generals command the army's forces from their Grotestar Vessels and typically carry out his will without question. Darius shares a strictly hierarchical relationship with them, treating them as tools to achieve his goals. His role as the final boss is solidified when, after all his plans have failed and his generals are defeated, he confronts the heroes personally in the final battle.
A key aspect of Darius's development is the revelation of his true nature. While he presents himself as an emperor, he is ultimately an android or a giant robotic construct whose core is an electronic computer brain. This weak point is visibly located in his forehead. His ideological rigidity is his primary flaw. Even when the surviving civilian population of Zela grows tired of war and seeks peaceful negotiations with Earth, Darius refuses to abandon his path of conquest, leaving his own people behind to face their doom as he and his army head to Earth for one final, fatal confrontation.
Notably, Emperor Darius possesses several formidable abilities befitting his mechanical nature. He is a capable swordsman and has demonstrated superhuman strength in combat. He can also fire powerful laser beams from his eyes, posing a significant threat even to the giant robot Gaiking in direct combat. However, his reliance on his electronic brain ultimately proves to be his undoing, as its destruction in the final battle is what finally ends his reign.
