Description
Yu-yu Kondo, a third-year middle school student from Kanazawa city in Kaga Province, begins his journey marked by extreme shyness and an inability to refuse requests. This vulnerability leads his older sisters to frequently pressure him into cross-dressing for their hobbies, resulting in public appearances where he is mistaken for an attractive girl, reinforcing his initial lack of assertiveness.
His path changes when Megumi Okura invites him to Dreamland Wonder Hill, introducing him to Vanguard and Team Blackout. Yu-yu possesses an innate ability to perceive others' emotions, a skill proving pivotal. He uses this empathy, channeled through his Vanguard unit Trickstar, to connect deeply with opponents—most notably breaking through Mirei Minae's emotional barriers during a critical battle at Nagoya Castle to address her unresolved trauma. Through Vanguard, Yu-yu evolves from passivity to decisive action, defending Team Blackout's banner against Tohya Ebata and later supporting Tohya's leadership transition.
Yu-yu shoulders significant leadership responsibilities. Following Danji Momoyama's departure and Tohya Ebata's eventual exit, he assumes command of Team Blackout during the will+Dress era. This role, however, exposes his vulnerabilities. His intense opposition to the Uniformers—a group advocating for abandoning individual cardfighting identities—breeds self-righteousness. A loss to Shirogane (later revealed as Zakusa) forces him to confront his own arrogance mirroring the Uniformers' ideology, triggering profound self-reflection. This culminates in his victory over Gui, after which he passes leadership to Megumi Okura and leaves the team to travel independently.
In combat, Yu-yu exclusively wields Dragon Empire decks centered on his signature unit, Trickstar. His initial strategy utilizes the overDress mechanic, evolving Trickstar into various Vairina forms. He later adopts X-overDress, combining Trickstar with Prayer Dragon units for enhanced synergy. Yu-yu integrates both mechanics to demonstrate that embracing past strengths is essential for progress. His final boss units, Chakrabarthi Divine Dragon, Nirvana and Chakrabarthi Phoenix Dragon, Nirvana Jheva, emphasize recursion by retrieving Trickstar from the drop zone while enabling multi-attack strategies.
Visually, Yu-yu's design evolves across the series: transitioning from a green-and-white jacket in overDress to a cropped red-and-black jacket in will+Dress. By Divinez, his appearance incorporates androgynous elements like a long ponytail and a red half-skirt, reflecting a blend of traditionally masculine and feminine traits.
His story concludes with his departure from Team Blackout after solidifying its legacy. Passing leadership to Megumi, his exit mirrors that of the team's original founder, Ruka Miyako—both prioritize the joy of cardfighting over competitive dominance and relinquish leadership to pursue personal journeys.
