Description
Kanade Hisaishi is a student at Kitauji High School who joins the concert band as a first-year euphonium player during Kumiko Oumae's second year. She is a short, fair-skinned teenage girl with cherry-red eyes and black hair cut in a bob with straight bangs, often accented by a small red ribbon on the left side.

On the surface, Kanade possesses a courteous personality and strong communication skills, making a favorable impression on her peers and seniors. However, beneath this polite exterior lies a more complex and strategic nature. Kumiko Oumae describes her as having a superficial courtesy or being "politely but rude in intent". This duality leads others to perceive her as a "little devil" who can be mischievous and teasing, particularly towards those she is close to.

Kanade's motivations and guarded personality are deeply rooted in a traumatic experience from middle school. During her second year of middle school, she was a more skilled player than a senior in her band. The senior was chosen for a competition based on perceived effort, but when the band failed to win gold, the senior blamed Kanade, and the rest of the band harbored resentment towards her for taking the spot. This event left Kanade with a lasting fear of being disliked by her seniors and a cynical view that showing effort is often valued over actual talent. At Kitauji, she initially plays a role, acting as the perfect kouhai to protect herself from potential conflict and rejection.

Her role in the story becomes central during the audition process for the competition. To avoid repeating her past trauma and potentially displacing a senior, Natsuki Nakagawa, Kanade deliberately underperforms during her audition. Her plan is discovered by Natsuki and Kumiko, leading to a confrontation where Kanade confesses her fears, saying, "I don't want to be hated by the people around me". Through the intervention of Kumiko and Natsuki, who prove that Kitauji values genuine ability over seniority or performance of effort, Kanade is convinced to audition again honestly and secures a spot in the competition.

Her most significant relationship is with Kumiko Oumae, her senior in the euphonium section. Kumiko recognizes her own younger self in Kanade and serves as her mentor, helping her navigate her personal struggles. Kanade deeply respects Kumiko and becomes protective of her, acting almost as a "guardian" figure. She has a tense initial relationship with Natsuki Nakagawa, both because Natsuki is a less skilled senior and because she fears Natsuki might resent her. This tension resolves after the audition incident. She also frequently teases her classmate Motomu Tsukinaga by deliberately using his disliked surname. Conversely, she is close friends with Ririka Kenzaki, with whom she enjoys spending time outside of school. Her perceptive nature allows her to understand and help other troubled first-years like tuba player Mirei Suzuki.

Throughout her first year, Kanade undergoes significant development, transitioning from a defensive and cynical individual to a more honest and integrated member of the band. She learns to trust that the environment at Kitauji is different from her middle school, allowing her to compete fairly and embrace her own talent. After the band wins gold at the Kansai competition, she is devastated by the outcome, crying out how "frustrating" it is, an echo of Kumiko's own journey and a sign of her deep commitment to the band. As an upperclassman in her later years, she matures into a leader, eventually becoming the vice-president of the concert band, symbolizing her full integration and acceptance as a key member of the euphonium section's legacy. As a musician, she is technically proficient on the euphonium, possessing skills that surpass some of her seniors. Beyond music, her hobbies include watching plays, gathering information, and taking selfies.
