TV-Series
Description
Koyō is one of the two protagonists of the story. She was originally an ordinary young woman living in Orchid Province, but her life changed when she caught the attention of Crown Prince Haku Keiun. After successfully performing a suture surgery on his injured companion Shiei, Keiun invited her to the capital Karyou, and she relocated there with her assistant and family member Singdam.
Koyō is exceptionally gifted in medicine and surgery, possessing knowledge and skills far beyond the common practices of the Moon Flower Kingdom, where illness is traditionally treated with rituals and herbal remedies. She is a brilliant and highly capable doctor, able to perform complex procedures such as open suturing and internal surgery. Her abilities are rooted in both a natural aptitude and a deep, almost obsessive fascination with the human body, particularly muscles and anatomy. This fascination sometimes leads her to behave in an eccentric and socially unaware manner, as her intense curiosity can override concern for patient comfort or social norms. She is described as beautiful, but also as slightly odd and lacking in emotional intelligence early on, which causes her to seem insensitive or oblivious to the feelings of others.
Her primary motivation is the pursuit of medical knowledge and the desire to heal. She is driven by a genuine passion for understanding how the body works and for applying that understanding to treat illness and injury. This passion, however, can make her reckless, as she is willing to take risks in order to perform surgeries or experiments. Over the course of the story, she gradually develops a better bedside manner and a greater awareness of the emotional needs of her patients, showing personal growth.
Koyō's role in the story is central: she is the doctor whose modern medical techniques and rational approach to healing challenge the superstitious traditions of the kingdom. She becomes a key ally to Prince Keiun, who wants to use her skills to improve the health of his people and spread her knowledge. Together, they confront political conspiracies, dangerous beliefs, and entrenched customs. She also becomes involved in the intrigues of the royal court, where her unconventional methods meet resistance.
Her key relationships include her bond with Singdam, who serves as both her assistant and her family, providing support and grounding. With Prince Keiun, she develops a relationship that begins with mutual respect for each other's abilities and gradually deepens into something more personal, though her single-minded focus on medicine often complicates matters. She also interacts with Shiei, Keiun's loyal companion, who was the first patient she saved.
Koyō's notable abilities include advanced surgical techniques such as suturing wounds and performing internal operations, detailed knowledge of herbal medicine and pharmacology, and a remarkable memory that allows her to recall medical texts and procedures after reading them only once. She is also skilled at improvisation, often using whatever tools and materials are available to treat her patients. Her dedication to medicine is her defining trait, and she continues to learn and grow as a healer throughout the series.
