Description
Chibi Mothra is a juvenile kaiju who first appeared in the 2019 children's book Close Friends, Chibi Godzilla before becoming a main character in the anime Chibi Godzilla Raids Again. She is depicted as a small moth with sparkling wings, and her design is a simplified, cute version of the classic Mothra. In the series, Chibi Mothra is characterized as an extremely shy and reserved divine moth who prefers to stay close to the Shobijin, the twin priestesses who serve as her telepathic interpreters. She typically avoids other monsters and relies on the Shobijin to express her feelings, though their interpretations sometimes lead to misunderstandings. This shyness can escalate into embarrassment to the point of crying, which is significant because her tears release poisonous scales that can harm those nearby. Despite her timid nature, Chibi Mothra demonstrates a kind and gentle personality, as seen when she revives the fainting Chibi Rodan with reassuring words. She also shows a thoughtful and slightly self-referential side; during a study session about Godzilla, she answers that the hardest enemy for Godzilla to defeat is himself, implying a belief that Godzilla could hurt himself with his own heat ray. Her role in the story is that of a supportive friend within the group of chibi monsters on Monster Island, often participating in group activities and study sessions. Over the course of the series, she develops a closer bond with the other chibi kaiju, gradually overcoming her shyness enough to interact with them more directly. Her key relationships include Chibi Godzilla, who tries to introduce her to new friends, and the Shobijin, who act as her voice. Notably, Chibi Mothra can communicate telepathically with the Shobijin, a trait inherited from the original Mothra. Her abilities include flight, the emission of poisonous scales when she cries, and her telepathic link with the Shobijin. The series explores her development through episodes such as The Resplendent Maiden, Chibi Mothra, where her shyness is central to the comedic misunderstanding, and Chibi Mothra's Secret Hobby, which reveals more facets of her personality.
