Description
Chouchou Konjakutei is a supporting character in Akane-banashi. He is a rakugoka belonging to the Konjakutei school and serves as that school's representative in the Rakugo Federation. He holds the rank of shin'uchi, the highest rank in the rakugo world, and is regarded as a major figure in the industry.

Chouchou's background includes a long history with the Arakawa school. During his days as a futatsume, he performed alongside Shinta Arakawa, Akane's father, as well as Taizen Arakawa. This places him in the same generation as those two and means he was present during the time of Shinta's promotion test and subsequent expulsion, giving him insight into that event.

Personality wise, Chouchou is boisterous, impulsive, and hedonistic. He is known as a self-destructive type of performer who lives for the moment. He enjoys gambling and often uses dice to decide which story he will perform on stage, reflecting a spontaneous and risk-taking approach to his craft. Offstage, he is generous and extravagant, frequently taking fellow rakugoka and even complete strangers at izakaya out for drinks and covering all their bills. His manner on stage is similarly lively and energetic, drawing enthusiastic and loud reactions from the audience.

His motivations are not deeply personal or vendetta driven. Rather, he seems motivated by the thrill of the performance and the joy of entertaining. He takes pride in his ability to turn even the lightest, most insignificant story into a powerful and engaging performance through sheer force of personality and skill. He does not take life too seriously, but he does take rakugo seriously, especially when evaluating others.

In the story, Chouchou serves as a key gateway for Akane's promotion to futatsume. Akane seeks him out because he is the only person who can lead her to Taizen Arakawa, the last member of the Arakawa Arch Four whose recommendation she needs. Chouchou agrees to train Akane and her rival Karashi, but sets a condition: they must fill a fifty seat venue for his student Asagao's futatsume debut performance. This test forces Akane to develop new strategies and expand her approach to performance.

His key relationships include his former friendship with Shinta Arakawa and his continuing connection to Taizen Arakawa, whom he addresses with familiarity. He also has his own student, Asagao, whose career he supports. His relationship with Akane begins as that of a distant, seemingly carefree senior figure but develops into that of an unconventional mentor.

In terms of development, Chouchou himself does not undergo a major personal arc. Instead, he acts as a catalyst for Akane's growth. His influence pushes her to develop a new, more outgoing style of rakugo that complements her existing introspective approach.

His notable abilities include a highly energetic and charismatic performance style, referred to as yang or bright art. This style is the opposite of Akane's more inward approach and draws strong reactions from audiences. He is skilled at reading people and situations, using gambling and challenges to test the resolve and character of younger performers. He is also adept at managing and organizing events, as seen when he orchestrates a condition that forces Akane and Karashi to work together.
