Description
Hone Onna is one of the three primary assistants who serve Ai Enma, the Hell Girl, and appears in all four seasons of the anime series. Her name translates to Bone Woman, a title that refers to her true nature as a yokai, or spirit, and to her ability to reveal the skeletal structure of her body. In her everyday form, she has the appearance of a strikingly beautiful woman with long, straight black hair in a hime-cut style, pale skin, and red or brown eyes, and she is typically dressed in a kimono with its obi tied in the front, a style historically associated with courtesans. When necessary, she can transform into a red straw doll that is given to clients of the Hell Correspondence as part of the contract.
Her background is rooted in a tragic human life. Before becoming a spirit, she was a woman named Tsuyu, who lived during the Edo period. Tsuyu was sold into servitude as a high-ranking courtesan to cover the debts of a young master she trusted. While working in the pleasure quarters, she became friends with another courtesan named Kiyo and fell in love with a man named Tetsuya, who wished to help her escape. Tsuyu planned the escape to include Kiyo, but Kiyo, driven by jealousy, betrayed the plan to the brothel owner. When Tsuyu and Tetsuya attempted to flee, they were ambushed, and Tsuyu was mortally wounded and thrown into a river. As her body drifted, she encountered the skeletons of other women who had died similar deaths, and their spirits merged with her own, transforming her into a yokai. She eventually came to serve Ai Enma, finding purpose and companionship in her role.
