Movie
Description
Rei Ichidō leads the eccentric Kimengumi group. His family runs a toy store, and he lives with his father, Takuseki, and younger sister, Kiri, after their mother's death. Takuseki shows clear favoritism towards Kiri, solidifying Rei's status as "The Un-Favorite." Kiri demonstrates greater maturity and responsibility, embodying the "Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling" dynamic through her academic focus and embarrassment at Rei's actions.
Academically, Rei faces significant challenges, failing his high school entrance exams three times before admission. He struggles in all subjects, including physical education, fitting the "Book Dumb" label. However, he occasionally wins athletic competitions unexpectedly due to his "Reality Warper" abilities. These powers allow him to exploit "Toon Physics," featuring "Voluntary Shapeshifting" and frequent transformations into "Super-Deformed" chibi forms for comedic effect. Physically, Rei possesses an odd appearance, notably his lack of eyebrows, which earns him the nickname "Mayunashi no Rei" (No-Eyebrows Rei). He proudly embraces his "Gonk" looks and "Cloudcuckoolander" nature as a self-aware "Mad Hatter."
Rei combines idiocy with kindness, fitting the "Idiot Hero" and "Kindhearted Simpleton" archetypes. He is a "Loon with a Heart of Gold," often causing well-intentioned mischief. His leadership unites the Kimengumi into an "Alliance of the Alienated" from previously isolated misfits. Though treated as a "Butt-Monkey" and occasional scapegoat by his friends, he remains their "True Companion." Romantically, Rei attracts Yui Kawa, the school’s popular and academically gifted "Class Princess," despite widespread confusion over her interest ("What Does She See in Him?"). Their relationship features mutual but unspoken affection, aligning with the "Twice Shy" trope, with Yui drawn to his humor and uniqueness ("Freaky Is Cool").
A head injury temporarily forces Rei into uncharacteristic seriousness, prompting his friends to express "We Want Our Idiot Back!". He ultimately reverts to his true self by the story's end. He owns Lassie, a "Funny Animal" dog that walks upright, further accentuating the comedic tone.
