Description
Osomatsu Matsuno is the eldest of the six identical Matsuno sextuplets and the titular character of Mr. Osomatsu, which portrays the brothers as adult versions of the mischievous children from the original Osomatsu-kun series. Born first among the sextuplets, he is the eldest son of the Matsuno family and the self-proclaimed leader of the group. Among his identical brothers, he is identified by his red hooded jacket, with red serving as his trademark color. His name comes from the Japanese word osomatsu, meaning lame or ill-prepared, a reflection of his comedic shortcomings.

In the original series, Osomatsu was depicted as a cheeky, fight-happy boy, described as a hooligan yet personable, who led his brothers into neighborhood mischief. In Mr. Osomatsu, he is reimagined as a twenty-something unemployed young man living at home with his parents and brothers as a NEET. He retains a fiery, self-confident, and pushy personality, frequently proclaiming himself the leader even though he is often the most immature member of the household. He is lazy, self-centered, and somewhat clueless, spending much of his time gambling on horse races and playing pachinko. He also possesses a manipulative streak and often uses his brothers for his own gain, though he deeply values the status quo of the six of them living together.

His primary motivations center on the pursuit of fun and the avoidance of work and responsibility. He craves popularity and attention, particularly from Totoko, the childhood friend and daughter of the local fishmonger whom all six brothers pursue, and he frequently competes with his siblings for her favor. At the same time, he is motivated by a desire to preserve the family's stagnant but comfortable way of life, and he struggles with the fear of his brothers growing up and leaving him behind. His role in the story is that of an instigator and central figure who drags his brothers into absurd schemes, get-rich-quick plots, and chaotic everyday mishaps, with most episodes revolving around his interactions with the other five.

His relationships with his brothers are competitive yet close. He often mocks Karamatsu, the second eldest, for his dramatic cool-guy persona. With Choromatsu, the third brother, he shares an odd-couple dynamic, with Choromatsu acting as the voice of reason against Osomatsu's self-indulgence; Osomatsu regularly teases Choromatsu for being a hidden otaku. His relationship with Todomatsu, the youngest, is particularly contentious, as Osomatsu takes pleasure in disrupting Todomatsu's attempts to maintain a fashionable social image. He also maintains longstanding rivalries with the neighborhood characters Iyami and Chibita, dating back to childhood. With his parents, he and his brothers freeload without contributing, though he shows occasional guilt and respect toward them.

His development throughout the series is gradual and tied to his resistance to change. While he rarely matures in a lasting way, moments of crisis bring out a genuine sense of big-brother responsibility, and episodes dealing with adulthood and job hunting reveal self-awareness and an underlying sincerity beneath his lazy exterior. In a later one-shot story set years ahead, he is shown to have become a typical salaryman and remains unmarried.

Osomatsu is notable as the best fighter among the sextuplets, possessing impressive hand-to-hand combat skills, and he occasionally employs clever tactics in humorous situations. However, his abilities are limited by his tendency toward self-sabotage and his lack of direction, and they are usually used to amplify the comedic situations he finds himself in rather than to achieve any lasting success.
