Description
Mangetsu Kohinata appears as an unremarkable high school student, lacking standout academic or athletic skills. To gain recognition, she cultivates a helpful and cheerful personality. Underneath this facade, she struggles with profound feelings of inner emptiness and a desperate yearning to find something uniquely hers. Her life transforms during a full moon when she stumbles into GRANBELM, a ritual battle where contenders pilot magical mecha called Armanox to decide the world's sole mage. Initially ignorant of magic, she gains her own Armanox, White Lily—a white mecha primarily wielding a sword but capable of ranged attacks—and forms an alliance with another participant, Shingetsu Ernesta Fukami.

White Lily mirrors Mangetsu's combat approach, fueled by immense yet uncontrolled magical power. Despite her inexperience, she displays extraordinary magical readings and can enter deep concentration states, overwhelming opponents through sheer force. Shingetsu teaches her to summon a whale-like familiar named Orca for battle support. Mangetsu possesses a natural resistance to mental attacks, and her Armanox generates a blue energy sword that occasionally shifts to black during intense emotional surges.

She enters GRANBELM driven by a desire to aid Shingetsu's goal of eradicating magic and to find personal meaning. This motivation faces crisis when she learns she is not human, but an artificial construct created by the Magiaconatus—GRANBELM's governing entity—specifically to support Shingetsu. This revelation explains her existential void and vast magical potential. As a being made of magic, her existence becomes endangered as Shingetsu's wish to eliminate magic approaches fulfillment. Mangetsu wrestles with this truth, experiencing deep distress but ultimately resolving to live meaningfully with her remaining time.

Key relationships shape her path. Shingetsu evolves into her closest confidante and emotional anchor, with narrative implications of romantic feelings. Their bond, symbolized by their names ("full moon" and "new moon"), fuels Mangetsu's loyalty even as Shingetsu's mission threatens her life. Her younger sister, Kibō, often sees her as irresponsible, though underlying care exists. After Mangetsu's erasure from reality due to her artificial nature, Kibō forgets her but later accepts her as a new friend. Other connections include Nene, an ally who deduces Mangetsu's true origin and offers aid; Kuon, a fellow participant whose fate horrifies Mangetsu; and Suishō, another artificial being who views Mangetsu as a counterpart. Mangetsu rejects Suishō's nihilism, affirming her individuality despite their shared creation.

Her development culminates in self-acceptance. Following despair after learning her origin, she chooses to embrace her relationships and her impact on others. In GRANBELM's final battle, she merges with Shingetsu to defeat Suishō, enabling Shingetsu to erase magic. This act seemingly erases Mangetsu, though ambiguous narrative hints suggest she may have transcended this fate to reunite with Shingetsu in a non-magical world.
