Description
Casval Rem Deikun entered the world in U.C. 0057 within the clock tower loft of Munzo University on Side 3. His parents, Zeon Zum Deikun and Astraia Tor Deikun, hid there during a Federation security crackdown; the event held symbolic weight as the previously broken clock advanced by one minute upon his arrival. His early childhood unfolded amidst political turmoil following his father's sudden death during an independence speech in U.C. 0068. Suspecting Zabi family involvement, family friend Jimba Ral convinced Astraia to flee the presidential residence with Casval and his younger sister Artesia. Their escape featured a dramatic confrontation with Kycilia Zabi, a harrowing journey in a Guntank where Casval displayed early combat instincts by firing on pursuing forces, and eventual relocation to Earth under Don Teabolo Mass's protection in Andalusia. The siblings assumed new identities as Édouard and Sayla Mass.
Life as Édouard Mass involved relative comfort, yet Jimba Ral's lectures constantly reminded them of Zabi treachery. A pivotal shift occurred in U.C. 0071 when assassins, likely sent by Kycilia, murdered Jimba and injured Teabolo; Édouard personally killed one assailant during the attack. The family then moved to the Texas Colony in Side 5. There, Édouard encountered his near-identical counterpart, Char Aznable, differing only in eye color. This period ended tragically with news of Astraia's death in U.C. 0075, profoundly hardening Édouard's demeanor and fueling his hatred for the Zabis.
Exploiting Char Aznable's desire to attend the Zeon military academy early, Casval orchestrated an identity swap. He planted an antique gun and fake explosives in Char's luggage, causing a security delay. Char, impatient, agreed to switch identities and take an earlier shuttle. This shuttle was subsequently destroyed by a bomb intended for Casval, orchestrated by Kycilia. Casval then assumed Char Aznable's identity permanently, enrolling in the Zeon Space Defense Military Academy. To explain the eye color discrepancy from the real Char's records, he claimed cosmic ray damage requiring a protective visor.
At the academy, "Char" excelled academically and militarily, forming a complex friendship with Garma Zabi. During the "Dawn Rebellion" in U.C. 0077, sparked by anti-Federation sentiments following a colonial accident, he played a key role in leading cadets to attack a Federation garrison. Before the assault, his roommate Lino Fernandez revealed he knew Char's true identity but promised secrecy. During the takeover of the garrison's control tower, Char directed Lino into a tank and then ordered his squad to destroy it, eliminating the loose end. Expelled for his role, he spent time on Earth where he encountered and rescued Lalah Sune from exploitation.
Rejoining the Zeon military, he became an early pilot of the MS-05 Zaku I. His defining moment came during the Battle of Loum at the start of the One Year War (U.C. 0079), piloting a custom red Zaku II. His exceptional speed and combat prowess, demonstrated by single-handedly destroying five Federation Magellan-class battleships, earned him the moniker "The Red Comet". His pursuit of the Federation ship White Base led to encounters with both his sister Sayla Mass and his lifelong rival, Amuro Ray, piloting the RX-78-2 Gundam. Char initiated his revenge against the Zabis by manipulating Garma Zabi into a fatal ambush by White Base forces, uttering the line, "Garma, blame this on the misfortune of your birth". His complex relationship with Newtypes deepened through his bond with Lalah Sune; her death at Amuro's hands during a battle, while protecting Char, cemented a bitter enmity between the two pilots.
After the One Year War, he adopted the alias Quattro Bajeena and joined the Anti-Earth Union Group (AEUG) to fight the Earth Federation's Titans task force during the Gryps Conflict, revealing his true identity as Casval Rem Deikun to undermine the Titans politically. Later, assuming leadership of Neo Zeon, he launched the Second Neo Zeon War in U.C. 0093 with the goal of forcing human migration to space by threatening Earth with an asteroid drop. His final confrontation with Amuro Ray occurred during this conflict, culminating in a battle where both were presumed deceased.
