Mayumi Tanaka

Description
Mayumi Tanaka is a highly celebrated Japanese voice actress and narrator, born on January 15, 1955, in Tokyo, Japan. Her real name is Mayumi Abe. She began her career in 1978 after graduating from Aoyama Gakuen Women's Junior College and is currently affiliated with the talent agency Aoni Production.

Tanaka is renowned for her distinctive, energetic, and low-pitched voice, which has made her one of the most iconic voice actresses for young boy characters in the industry, often mentioned alongside Masako Nozawa. She is known for using her natural voice in her performances, which allows her to deliver passionate shouts with an intensity comparable to male voice actors. While her career is dominated by boy roles, she has also demonstrated her versatility by voicing feminine characters and villains, such as Ira in Glitter Force Doki Doki.

Her most iconic and long-running role is that of Monkey D. Luffy in the immensely popular anime One Piece, a part she has played since 1999. The original manga author, Eiichiro Oda, specifically envisioned Tanaka for the role after being impressed by her performance as Pazu in the film Castle in the Sky. She has voiced Luffy in countless television episodes, films, and specials, including One Piece Stampede and One Piece Film Red.

Equally prominent is her role as Krillin in the Dragon Ball franchise, a character she has voiced for decades across Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Super, and numerous films such as Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. She also voices other characters in the series, including Yajirobe and the Fortune-teller Baba.

Beyond these global phenomena, Tanaka has an extensive and diverse filmography. Some of her other notable roles include Koenma in Yu Yu Hakusho, Pazu in Hayao Miyazaki's Castle in the Sky, Kirimaru in Nintama Rantarō, Wataru in the Mashin Hero Wataru series, Kanna Kirishima in the Sakura Wars series, Ryunosuke Fujinami in Urusei Yatsura, Chibita in Osomatsu-kun, and the title character in Tottemo! Luckyman. Her career also includes voicing a young Casval Rem Deikun in Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin and Sunakake Baba in GeGeGe no Kitarō. She continues to work actively, with recent roles including Turbo Granny in the 2024 anime Dandadan.

In recognition of her outstanding career and contributions to the voice acting industry, Mayumi Tanaka has received two Seiyu Awards. She won the Kazue Takahashi Award at the 5th Seiyu Awards and the Kids/Family Award at the 7th Seiyu Awards in 2013.
