TV-Series
Description
Jean is a young orphan boy living on the streets of Paris in the 1987 anime adaptation of The Three Musketeers. He is a main character who becomes the first friend and loyal companion of the protagonist, D'Artagnan, shortly after the latter arrives in the capital. Jean is also known by the nickname Barefoot Jean.

In terms of background, Jean is approximately nine years old and has no fixed home, instead living on a small makeshift boat moored on the Seine River. He survives by carving and selling small wooden dolls, which he makes by hand. While he is an orphan who wanders the city, he is not completely without family ties; a significant motivation for him is the search for his mother, Catherine, from whom he was separated when he was only three years old.

Jean's personality is characterized by his resourcefulness, kindness, and compassion. Despite his difficult circumstances as a street child, he is quick to offer hospitality to D'Artagnan, sharing his boat and helping him navigate the challenges of the city. He is presented as an agile and clever boy whose quick thinking and physical nimbleness often prove valuable in dangerous situations.

Within the story, Jean serves as D'Artagnan's close companion and a supporting figure to the main group of musketeers. He actively participates in many of the adventures alongside D'Artagnan, Constance Bonacieux, and the three musketeers, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. His relationship with D'Artagnan is one of mutual respect and care, which differs from the more traditional and dismissive master-servant dynamic found in Alexandre Dumas's original novel. Jean is also a key figure in one of the series' significant subplots, as he accidentally discovers that the musketeer Aramis is a woman. Jean becomes a secret keeper, helping to protect this truth from those who would use it against her.

Jean also undergoes notable development through his personal quest. While the mystery of his mother is not resolved within the main television series, its conclusion is revealed in the subsequent theatrical film, Anime Sanjuushi: Aramis no Boken (The Three Musketeers: Aramis' Great Adventure).

Jean's most notable abilities are his manual dexterity and inventive mind. He is a skilled craftsman, able to create various useful gadgets and inventions that assist the group on their missions. Complementing this is his great agility, which allows him to escape danger and help his friends when they find themselves in difficult predicaments.
