Description
Zeon Zum Deikun was a philosopher and politician pivotal to the early Universal Century timeline. Born before Universal Century 0068, he developed Contolism, synthesizing Ereism (belief in Earth's sacredness requiring human habitation in space) and Sideism (the right to space colony self-determination and independence from the Earth Federation). He also formulated the Newtype Theory, proposing that humans evolving in space would develop a sixth sense enabling mental communication and heightened consciousness as an adaptation to the space environment.
Initially a member of the Earth Federation Assembly, Zeon renounced his position and relocated to Side 3 (L2) around UC 0052. His teachings resonated with space colonists facing systemic Federation discrimination. By UC 0061, Side 3 appointed him its leader. He declared its independence as the Republic of Munzo and established a colonial guard to resist anticipated Federation reprisals under the resource-blockading Bardot Policy.
Zeon's political ascent culminated in UC 0068 with plans for a major address expected to formalize independence and potentially declare war against the Federation. During preparations, he expressed fatalistic premonitions of martyrdom. While speaking at the podium, he suffered a sudden, fatal collapse before announcing his declaration. His death ignited widespread riots and political instability.
Degwin Sodo Zabi, Zeon's close advisor and Munzo's Vice Chairman, publicly claimed Zeon named him successor on his deathbed. However, widespread suspicion, notably from Zeon loyalist Jimba Ral, held that Degwin or his family orchestrated Zeon's assassination to seize power. Degwin subsequently transformed the republic into the Principality of Zeon, consolidating control and placing his children in key roles. The Zabi family retained Zeon's name to legitimize their rule while systematically purging his remaining supporters.
Zeon's personal life involved complex relationships. He had a legal wife, Roselucia, who supported his early activism but withdrew from public life due to illness. He also had a mistress, Astraia Tor Deikun, a singer at Club Eden, with whom he had two children: Casval Rem Deikun and Artesia Som Deikun. Following Zeon’s death, Jimba Ral and his son Ramba Ral helped Astraia and the children escape Side 3 amidst Zabi persecution. They fled to Earth under Teabolo Mass's protection, who adopted them. Casval eventually assumed the identity of Char Aznable, while Artesia became Sayla Mass.
Zeon's philosophical legacy, particularly Newtype Theory and Contolism, became foundational to Zeon's ideology, though the Zabi regime distorted his ideals to justify militarism and conquest. His core vision emphasized humanity's evolutionary destiny in space, the sacredness of Earth requiring its preservation by relocating all humanity to colonies, and establishing fair Spacenoid-led governance. He explicitly rejected war over Earth as unnecessary. Despite his physical absence, Zeon's ideas and the circumstances of his death profoundly influenced his children's motivations and the trajectory of the One Year War.
