TV Special
Description
Caroline serves as one of twin attendants within the Velvet Room alongside her sister Justine, operating under Igor's authority. Neither twin initially realizes they are fragmented halves of a single entity, Lavenza, whose existence was fractured by the false Igor—later revealed as the deity Yaldabaoth—prior to the events of Persona 5. This division leaves Caroline and Justine functioning as separate beings under Yaldabaoth's influence.
Her appearance features platinum blonde hair styled in buns, yellow eyes, and a black eyepatch marked with a "V" over one eye. She wears a blue prison guard uniform and a hat bearing the letters "X-M-R-N," which combine with Justine's hat ("O-Y-O-O") to form "OXYMORON." Caroline typically wields an electric shock baton, using it to intimidate the protagonist, whom she consistently addresses as "inmate."
Caroline exhibits an ill-tempered, impatient demeanor, often displaying overt hostility toward the protagonist. She physically kicks him into the Velvet Room during visits. This behavior reflects a "tsundere" archetype, where aggression masks underlying respect; inconsistencies surface, like her practicing intimidating poses privately but feeling too embarrassed to use them. She frequently demeans Justine, establishing a domineering dynamic. However, she gradually develops genuine respect for the protagonist as their Confidant bond deepens.
Within the Velvet Room, the twins perform critical Persona management functions. They fuse Personas using guillotines, resorting to a chainsaw during fusion accidents. They convert Personas into items via an electric chair and utilize gallows to transfer abilities between Personas. They contact the protagonist directly when Personas complete solitary confinement.
During the climax against Yaldabaoth, Caroline and Justine initially obey his command to subdue the protagonist. After a few turns, they resist upon realizing their conscience prevents further combat. This hesitation allows Lavenza's consciousness—manifesting as a butterfly—to reveal Yaldabaoth's deception and their true purpose as guides. Caroline then instructs the protagonist to fuse her and Justine back into Lavenza, restoring their original form.
In subsequent media like Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight and Persona 5 Royal, Lavenza regains the ability to split into Caroline and Justine at will, enabling mechanics such as All-out Attacks in Royal. In Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth, the twins interact with their older siblings (Margaret, Elizabeth, Theodore), showing them respect and particularly fearing Margaret's disapproval during fusion accidents. Their relationship with Elizabeth remains strained, noted in Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight and Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight.
Within Persona 5 the Animation: Stars and Ours, Caroline appears in a minor, non-speaking role during the final story events, consistent with her Velvet Room functions and narrative position.
