Description
Kotona Takashina, a popular and innocent Tokyo high school student, navigates life with her boyfriend Haruto Ichihara and close friend Yusuke Ninomiya. Her ordinary existence fractures when a shadowy attacker stabs her, prompting Haruto and Yusuke to intervene. This act catapults the trio into Ni no Kuni—a parallel realm housing Kotona’s ethereal counterpart, Princess Astrid Astrum of Evermore. The two share striking physical resemblances, a preference for sour oranges, and a metaphysical bond: injuries to one manifest in the other.
Returning home, Kotona develops a terminal malignant tumor, her survival hinging on a dire choice—sacrificing Astrid to prolong her own life. As her health falters, requiring sedation, her friends wrestle with this moral quandary. Her recovery arrives only after their allies vanquish Galeroth Felgrimm, the threat menacing both worlds. Post-battle, Kotona’s memories of Yusuke dissolve, yet she rebuilds her life alongside Haruto, her cheerful spirit intact.
Astrid Astrum commands magic through her wand and the protective Aegis Spell, wielding a dagger inherited from her late mother—a weapon able to breach magical defenses. Raised by King Fidelius after her mother’s death, she endures an assassination plot by her power-hungry uncle, Sedulus, surviving a cursed blade strike thanks to Yusuke’s aid. Defying her kingdom’s prejudices, she champions fair treatment of interworld travelers and arms Yusuke with her mother’s dagger to confront Galeroth.
Kind yet justice-driven, Astrid challenges Evermore’s antiquated customs, forging a bond with Yusuke that evolves into mutual support—she later endorses his rise to kingship. Though her fate remains tethered to Kotona’s, both survive the conflict, their shared trials erased from Kotona’s mind. Their narratives intertwine through mortality and sovereignty struggles, resolved by allies uniting both realms. With threats neutralized, each thrives independently, their destinies unshackled yet forever shadowed by the echo of a connection neither fully recalls.
