Description
Born in 806 within Marley's oppressive Liberio internment zone, Grisha Jaeger rejected his parents' subservience to Marleyan rule. In 817, taking his sister Faye beyond the zone to see an airship led to her capture and death by Marleyan officers, an event that fueled his hatred for Marley and convinced him Eldians shouldn't suffer for ancestral sins.
Trained as a doctor, Grisha learned the truth of Faye's death from a patient and joined the Eldian Restorationists. He married Dina Fritz, a royal descendant, and they had a son, Zeke. Grisha's charisma and fiery speeches advocating Eldian freedom and revenge propelled his rise within the movement. His fanaticism blinded him to Zeke's needs; he neglected his son and pressured him to become a Warrior candidate. This resulted in Zeke betraying the Restorationists to Marleyan authorities, leading to Grisha's capture, torture, and exile to Paradis Island in 832.
During sentencing, Grisha was rescued by Eren Kruger ("the Owl"), a Marleyan spy. Kruger transferred the Attack Titan to Grisha and tasked him with infiltrating Paradis's Walls to steal the Founding Titan from the Reiss family. Smuggled into the Walls by Keith Shadis, Grisha settled in Shiganshina. He documented Eldian history, Marley's oppression, and Titan biology in hidden journals, including a photograph of Dina and Zeke.
In Paradis, Grisha married Carla Jaeger, a former barmaid introduced by Shadis. They had a son, Eren, and later adopted Mikasa Ackerman. Working as a doctor, Grisha delayed his mission for years, prioritizing his new family. However, after the fall of Wall Maria in 845 and Carla's death, he resumed his objective. Confronting the Reiss family in their chapel, he hesitated to kill children but ultimately slaughtered them after experiencing future memories of Eren's actions. He seized the Founding Titan from Frieda Reiss but could not wield its power without royal blood.
Shortly after, Grisha injected Eren with Titan serum, transferring both the Attack and Founding Titans to him. He implored Eren to reach the basement and stop the Titans, aware of the harsh path ahead. In his final moments, via the Paths dimension, he encountered Zeke's future self, expressing remorse for his failures as a father and pleading with him to stop Eren. Despite witnessing Eren's future genocide (the Rumbling) with horror, Grisha proceeded with the transfer, partly reignited by hatred upon learning of Carla's death.
Physically, Grisha was tall and slender, with black or brown hair in differing portrayals, a thin beard, and gray or teal-green eyes. He wore round glasses and a suit, bearing a cross-shaped scar on his chest from his Restorationist oath. His 15-meter Attack Titan form featured a bulky torso, elongated ears, long dark hair, and a beard-like flesh covering around the mouth.
Grisha died in 845 after transferring his Titans to Eren. His legacy centered on the basement journals, which revealed the world's truths to Eren and the Survey Corps, catalyzing their conflict beyond the Walls.
