Description
Grisha Jaeger entered the world in 806 within Marley's oppressive Liberio internment zone. Defying his mother as a child in 817, he led his younger sister Faye beyond the zone's boundaries to glimpse an airship. Marleyan officers captured them; Faye was later discovered dead, an event searing itself into Grisha's core. His father preached compliance with Marleyan narratives blaming Eldians for past sins, but Grisha rejected this, believing his people deserved no punishment for ancestral crimes.
He trained as a doctor and joined the Eldian Restorationists after learning the brutal truth of Faye's demise from a patient, Grice. Within the movement, he wed Dina Fritz, a descendant of Eldia's royal bloodline, and they bore a son, Zeke. Grisha ascended to prominence through fiery, charismatic speeches championing Eldian liberation, proclaiming his people "chosen children of God." He plotted for Zeke to infiltrate Marley's Warrior Unit to advance their cause. This fixation led Grisha and Dina to neglect Zeke, relentlessly drilling Restorationist dogma into him. When Zeke faltered as a Warrior candidate, Grisha met him with verbal abuse. Zeke ultimately betrayed the Restorationists to Marleyan authorities, condemning Grisha's comrades, including Dina, to execution or Titan transformation.
Sentenced to Paradis Island exile, Grisha was intercepted by Eren Kruger, the "Owl" and wielder of the Attack Titan. Kruger transferred this Titan power to Grisha, charging him with infiltrating Paradis's walls and seizing the Founding Titan from the royal Reiss dynasty. Grisha entered the walls alongside Survey Corps member Keith Shadis, settling in Shiganshina District. He married Carla Yeager, fathered a son named Eren, and meticulously documented Eldian history, Marley, and Titans in books hidden within his basement. Departing from his approach with Zeke, Grisha initially shielded Eren from Restorationist fervor, yearning for him to live unchained.
After Wall Maria's fall in 845 claimed Carla's life, Grisha located the Reiss family in their subterranean chapel. Confronted by future memories of Eren delivered through the Attack Titan's power, he witnessed the looming global genocide ("the Rumbling"). Horrified, he hesitated to slay the Reiss children, invoking his healer's oath. Yet, propelled by Eren's future manipulation and consuming grief over Carla, he slaughtered the family, consumed Founding Titan holder Frieda Reiss, and claimed her power. Instantly after, through Paths—the transdimensional plane linking Titans—he encountered Zeke, tearfully confessing his paternal failure and begging him to halt Eren.
Despite terror at Eren's destined path, Grisha returned to Shiganshina. Finding young Eren amidst the devastation, he injected him with Titan serum, enabling Eren to consume him and inherit both the Attack and Founding Titans. This final act passed his mission to his son while ensuring his own demise.
Physically, Grisha stood tall and slender, possessing gray eyes (manga) or teal-green eyes (anime), black/brown hair, a thin beard, and round glasses. A self-inflicted cross scar marked his chest, a relic of his Restorationist oath. His 15-meter Attack Titan form featured a bulky torso, elongated ears, long dark hair, a thick beard, and flesh obscuring its mouth.
Personality-wise, Grisha burned with intense passion yet lacked self-awareness. Childhood trauma forged a fanatical hatred for Marley and a thirst for Eldian vengeance, blinding him to the fallout of indoctrinating Zeke. He exhibited rashness, evident when endangering Faye, and later, weak willpower, initially refusing Kruger's mission. His later years, however, revealed growth: he expressed genuine love for Eren, voiced profound regret over Zeke, and showed compassion by refusing to exult in his sister's killer's death. His ultimate actions laid bare his conflict—horrified by the Rumbling yet driven by vengeance for Carla to empower Eren.
