Description
Mai Yanase, a 13-year-old middle school student at Minoseki Academy, hails from a wealthy background as the poster girl for the emerging Yanase Group. She has two younger sisters, Miu and Shiori, and a loyal butler named Shibata. Her appearance features purple hair tied with a pink ribbon and green eyes, typically dressed in her school uniform with a frilly petticoat under her skirt.
Her personality blends calmness and bravery with a nurturing, older-sister tendency to care for others. She works hard and confronts hardships without hesitation, though she can be somewhat shy and reserved. Among her hobbies, she takes pride in making confectioneries, particularly cookies well-regarded by peers like Kanami and Sayaka. Mai joined Minoseki Academy in middle grade, where she met and befriended Kanami Etou.
In combat, Mai demonstrates high proficiency in kenjutsu, achieving runner-up in Minoseki Academy's Representative Selection Tournament and qualifying for the National Swordsmanship Tournament. She practices the efficient and organized Hokushin Ittō-ryū style, wielding the okatana Magoroku Kanemoto crafted by the renowned swordsmith. Mai sustains Utsushi longer than her classmates and exhibits keen intellect, such as predicting locations by analyzing environmental sounds during calls. At the National Tournament, she defeated Kaoru Mashiko of Osafune Girls' Academy but lost decisively to Kanami Etou when Kanami intercepted her iaijutsu strike.
After the tournament, Mai witnessed Hiyori Juujou's attack on Yukari Origami and Kanami's escape with Hiyori. Though interrogated and cleared by Maki Shidou of the Origami Family's Elite Guard, Mai utilized her family's resources to search for Kanami and Hiyori. She located them confronting an aradama and, upon hearing their revelations about Yukari's identity, chose to trust Kanami and permitted their escape—a decision that disappointed Yukina Takatsu, president of Renpu Girls' School.
Later, Mai protected Sayaka Itomi from Yukari's forces, fostering a friendship where she acted as a supportive older sister figure. During the battle against Yukari, the team acknowledged her strategic intellect and leadership suitability. Mai occasionally struggles with feelings of inadequacy when comparing her abilities to her peers.
In the spin-off "Mini Toji," set during the four-month interval between episodes 12 and 13 of the main series, Mai appears alongside other characters in a comedic, chibi-style format. This spin-off provides no additional character development or background story beyond her established traits and relationships.
