TV-Series
Description
Kaoru Mashiko is a 15-year-old first-year student at Osafune Girls' Academy, standing 135 cm tall. She possesses long pink hair styled in twin ponytails resembling dog ears, light blue eyes, and fair skin. Her petite frame causes her uniform vest to hang loosely over her shoulders; she typically pairs it with white thigh-high socks and high-heeled Mary Janes. The guardian youkai Nene, linked to her family heritage, is often perched atop her head.
Personality-wise, Kaoru exhibits a consistently sluggish and taciturn demeanor, prioritizing energy conservation and expressing a preference for rest. She uses the masculine pronoun "ore" for self-reference. Despite her seemingly indifferent attitude, she deeply cares for and relies on her partner Ellen Kohagura. Her reserved nature coexists with a strong underlying sense of justice.
Her background stems from the Mashiko family, traditionally entrusted with passing down the guardian youkai Nene and the massive okatana Nenekirimaru. Aware of Aradama threats as a child, Kaoru initially resented Nene for being a youkai. This changed when Nene guided her home after she became lost in a forest, forging a close bond. Upon enrolling at Osafune, she met Ellen, and their partnership led both to join the covert group Mokusa, primarily motivated by Kaoru's loyalty to Ellen.
Throughout the series, Kaoru participates in the National Swordsmanship Tournament but loses early, prioritizing Aradama combat over tournaments. She later engages in multiple conflicts, including a beach mission in Shonan and a confrontation in Ebisu where she and Ellen ambush fugitives Kanami Etou and Hiyori Juujou. After their defeat, Kaoru reveals her true intent was testing the fugitives' worthiness to join Mokusa. During an Elite Guard attack, Nene saves Kaoru from a near-fatal fall, prompting Kaoru to fight more seriously and defeat Yomi Satsuki. She subsequently joins Mokusa's raid on the Special Sword Administration Bureau headquarters, driven by resolve to avenge affected civilians after Mokusa's base is compromised.
In combat, Kaoru wields the two-meter-long Nenekirimaru with immense physical strength, specializing in the Yakumaru Jigen-Ryu swordsmanship style focused on slow but devastating strikes effective against Aradama. She maintains Utsushi for extended periods, though her average stamina leads to post-battle exhaustion. Her fighting style is less suited for tournaments due to its deliberate pace.
The spin-off "Mini Toji," depicting chibi-style daily lives during a four-month interval in the main series, features Kaoru retaining her low-energy personality while participating in school activities and lighthearted adventures with other Toji.
