Description
Lord El-Melloi II is the title adopted by a mage originally named Waver Velvet, who serves as the main protagonist of the anime Lord El-Melloi II's Case Files: Rail Zeppelin Grace note. Ten years prior to the events of the series, Waver participated in the Fourth Holy Grail War as the Master of the Rider-class servant Iskandar, also known as Alexander the Great. That conflict ended in defeat and the death of his servant, but the experience fundamentally shaped his character. After the war, Waver returned to the Clock Tower, the central institution of the Mage's Association, and eventually rose to become a professor of modern magecraft. He was adopted into the El-Melloi family and given the title Lord El-Melloi II, acting as the temporary head of the household until Reines El-Melloi Archisorte, the younger sister of his former mentor Kayneth, comes of age to take over.

Personality wise, Lord El-Melloi II is often described as cynical, moody, and sarcastic on the surface, but beneath that exterior he is fundamentally compassionate and meddlesome. He carries a deep sense of guilt and responsibility for the death of Kayneth, his former teacher, and this drives much of his motivation. He is acutely aware of his own limitations as a mage, which fuels a persistent complex about his perceived powerlessness. Nevertheless, he possesses a sharp analytical mind and an extraordinary ability to observe and understand people, making him a gifted teacher and investigator. He is devoted to his students and will not ignore a problem that troubles him, even when it would be safer to stay uninvolved.

In the story, Lord El-Melloi II acts as a detective figure, solving magical mysteries and conspiracies within the Clock Tower and beyond. His role is that of a reluctant but capable leader, navigating the complex politics of the Mage's Association while trying to uphold his own principles. His key relationship is with his apprentice Gray, a mysterious young woman who accompanies him and assists in his investigations. Their dynamic is central to the series, with Gray often serving as his physical protector while he provides intellectual guidance. He also has a tense but cooperative relationship with Reines, who manipulates him into taking on cases, and he maintains ties with former rivals and allies from his past, including other masters and servants.

Throughout the series, Lord El-Melloi II undergoes significant development, moving from a disillusioned young man haunted by his past to a more mature and confident educator who has learned to wield his knowledge and influence responsibly. His experiences in the Holy Grail War taught him the value of human connection and the cost of ambition, and he now applies those lessons to mentoring the next generation of mages.

Notable abilities include a deep knowledge of modern magecraft and its history, exceptional deductive reasoning, and a talent for teaching that has earned him a reputation as one of the Clock Tower's most effective instructors. While his personal magical power is modest compared to other Lords, his strategic mind and ability to read situations and people compensate for this weakness. In some Fate media, he is also capable of serving as a Pseudo-Servant, combining his consciousness with the legendary Chinese strategist Zhuge Liang, which grants him enhanced tactical abilities and access to additional magecraft. However, in the anime series, he relies primarily on his own intellect and experience to solve the cases presented to him.
