Description
Kagura Sôma is a member of the Sohma family, bound by the Chinese Zodiac curse that transforms her into a brown boar whenever she is embraced by someone of the opposite sex not under the curse or when she experiences significant physical or emotional strain.

She stands 160.5 cm tall and weighs 51 kg, with brown hair, brown eyes, blood type B, and the astrological sign Cancer. Over the course of the story, she ages from 17–18 to 19–20 years old. Kagura is a student who initially attends a private girls' junior college.

Her appearance is petite and feminine, frequently dressed in skirts, blouses, and dresses. A notable feature is the orange cat backpack she always carries. Her school uniform includes a white tailored shirt with black sleeves, a yellow ribbon, a black undershirt, tights, and black loafers.

Kagura’s personality presents a contrast: outwardly sweet, polite, and considerate, yet prone to violent and impulsive outbursts, especially toward Kyo Sohma, whom she claims to love. These aggressive episodes stem from emotional immaturity rather than malice, reflecting the forceful nature of the boar spirit. She is clingy, disregards personal boundaries, and is strong-willed. At the same time, she is energetic, openly emotional, and possesses a big-sister demeanor. She forges a strong friendship with Tohru Honda despite initially seeing her as a rival. Through personal growth, Kagura evolves into a more gentle and emotionally mature individual with fewer violent tendencies.

As a child, Kagura resented her Zodiac identity and blamed herself for her parents' arguments. Her father, displeased with her curse, eventually left the family. At age seven, she met five-year-old Kyo Sohma, the Cat of the Zodiac. Feeling his position was worse than her own, she began spending time with him out of pity. In one instance, she threatened him with a knife—or a boulder in the anime—to force a marriage proposal.

A turning point occurred when she insisted on wearing Kyo’s Juzu beads, which suppressed his true form. After tearing them away, she witnessed his monstrous appearance and fled in terror. Kyo subsequently avoided her. To conceal her guilt, Kagura convinced herself she was in love with him, believing that by accepting his monstrous form she could erase her own shame and become a better person. This led to an obsessive pursuit of his affection.

Kagura lives with her mother—who is protective and accepting of her dual nature—and her distant relative Isuzu Sohma (Rin). Though not initially as close as Kagura believed, their relationship deepens over time. She is also good friends with Ritsu Sohma and maintains friendly terms with Yuki Sohma, whom she calls “Yun-chan.”

She trains at Kazuma Sohma’s dojo, which accounts for her considerable physical strength.

Her involvement in the story begins when she visits Shigure Sohma’s house searching for Kyo. Upon seeing him, she attacks him violently, then introduces herself to Tohru Honda as Kyo’s fiancée—a claim Kyo says was made under duress. Kagura explains that, as fellow Zodiac members, they can hug without triggering her transformation, which she interprets as fate. She initially regards Tohru as a rival but later befriends her after cooking together.

Kagura continues to pursue Kyo, even organizing a Valentine’s Day double date with Tohru and Yuki. On another visit, she overhears Kazuma discussing his plan to reveal Kyo’s true form to Tohru and secretly witnesses the event.

Her development accelerates when Rin Sohma challenges the authenticity of Kagura’s love for Kyo. This leads Kagura to confess to Kyo that her feelings were rooted in pity and guilt rather than true love. She admits she used her proclaimed love to ease her own guilt and selfishness over abandoning him years earlier. She apologizes for her behavior and acknowledges that Tohru is the one Kyo truly loves.

After this, Kagura genuinely relinquishes her romantic pursuit of Kyo but affirms she still cares for him. In a later incident, after Tohru confesses her love for Kyo to Rin, Kagura slaps Tohru hard enough to render her unconscious. She insists Tohru should confess directly to Kyo. When Rin attacks her in response, Kagura hugs her and apologizes to Rin—but not to Tohru, stating they had “spoken through their fists.”

Kagura is among the few female Zodiac members never directly or indirectly harmed by Akito Sohma, the family head.

After the Zodiac curse breaks, Kagura moves on with her life. She eventually marries and has a son.
