Description
Isuzu Sôma, called Rin, carries the Horse spirit’s curse from the Chinese Zodiac within her Sôma bloodline. This curse transforms her into a black horse if embraced by someone of the opposite sex or during extreme stress.
Rin endured severe childhood trauma. Her parents masked their resentment with false affection until she questioned their happiness, triggering neglect and physical abuse that hospitalized her. At the hospital, her mother explicitly rejected her, declaring she could no longer love Rin. This abandonment shattered Rin’s self-worth and eroded her ability to trust. Later living with Kagura Sôma’s family, she struggled to form bonds, frequently running away and skipping school.
Stubborn and fiercely independent, Rin uses an abrasive demeanor and sharp words to distance others. Her trauma manifests in psychosomatic symptoms: stomach ulcers, poor eating habits, fainting spells, and light sleeping. She avoids eating near anyone except Hatsuharu "Haru" Sôma and later Tohru Honda. Her gothic fashion rebels against her parents' earlier attempts to dress her like a doll, mirroring her internal "darkness."
Haru anchors Rin’s emotional world. They bonded as children when she protected him during visits to Yuki Sôma’s isolated room, evolving into a romantic and sexual relationship before the series. When Akito discovered them, Rin claimed sole responsibility to shield Haru. Akito retaliated by pushing her from a second-story window, causing severe injuries and a lasting back scar. Hospitalized, Rin broke up with Haru without explanation, convinced her presence harmed him. She then dedicated herself to breaking the zodiac curse to free Haru, rejecting help—especially from Tohru, whom she deemed too kind and vulnerable.
Rin pursued the curse’s end by seeking aid from Kazuma, Shigure, and Ren Sôma. Ren manipulated her into stealing a black box from Akito’s room, promising curse-related secrets. Caught by Akito, Rin was confined to the Cat’s prison, where Akito cut her hip-length hair unevenly to her nape. Freed by Kureno, she collapsed on the street and was found by Haru. This became a turning point: she reconciled with Haru, accepted his support, and gradually opened to Tohru’s kindness, viewing her as a mother figure. Rin grew fiercely protective of Tohru after learning of her cliff fall.
Post-curse, Rin grappled with unresolved fury toward Akito for abusing the zodiac members, expressing lingering resentment when others moved on. She confronted how the curse’s end didn’t erase her trauma or emotional pain. Rin eventually married Haru, bearing twins named Sora and Riku. She channeled emotions into art and maintained ties with Momiji, Kagura, and Hiro Sôma.
