Description
Kazuma Sôma is a non-cursed member of the Sohma family who serves as a martial arts master running a dojo near the family's main estate. He teaches several younger Sohmas, including Kyo, Yuki, Kagura, and Hatsuharu. Despite a youthful appearance, his age is confirmed to be in his forties. His physical appearance evolves, initially featuring long brown hair tied in a ponytail in the manga and 2019 anime adaptation, later cut short after a significant emotional resolution involving Kyo; in the 2001 anime, his hair and eyes are grey. He typically wears traditional dark blue kimono attire.

His personality combines wisdom, patience, and a calm demeanor with private struggles of self-doubt, particularly regarding his motivations and an initial sense of selfishness in imposing his feelings on Kyo. Kazuma is exceptionally empathetic and protective, especially toward those shunned by the family. However, he is inept at practical daily tasks like cooking and tea preparation, relying on his assistant Kunimitsu Tomoda for household management and sometimes burning meals while distracted by reading.

Kazuma's background centers on guilt stemming from a childhood encounter where he cruelly rejected candy offered by his grandfather, the previous Cat spirit, calling it "cursed," though his grandfather responded with forgiveness. This haunted Kazuma, especially after witnessing the similar isolation suffered by Kyo, the current Cat. When Kyo's mother died by suicide and his biological father abandoned him, Kazuma took Kyo in as an act of atonement. He raised Kyo as his adoptive son, defying family members who pitied him for caring for the outcast Cat. Early on, Kyo rejected Kazuma as a father to shield him from disdain, causing Kazuma to emotionally distance himself.

A pivotal development occurs when Kazuma orchestrates Kyo's transformation into his true form in front of Tohru Honda, testing Tohru's sincerity and challenging Kyo's self-loathing. After Tohru accepts Kyo, Kazuma confesses his initial guilt-driven motives but affirms his genuine paternal love. Kyo reconciles with him, vowing to become worthy of calling Kazuma his father. This prompts Kazuma to cut his ponytail—a superstitious practice he no longer needs—symbolizing his newfound confidence in Kyo's future. Kyo later resides with Shigure but trains at Kazuma's dojo three times weekly.

Beyond Kyo, Kazuma provides sanctuary for Isuzu "Rin" Sohma during her recovery from Akito's abuse. In the conclusion, he remains a supportive figure, attending Kyo and Tohru's wedding and later becoming a grandfather to their children. While spin-off media implies a potential connection with Saki Hanajima, who works at his dojo, creator notes clarify he views her only as Kyo's classmate.
