Description
Kamijou Touma, also romanized as Toma Kamijo, is a high school student in Academy City, officially a Level 0 esper despite wielding the unique ability "Imagine Breaker" in his right hand. This power negates supernatural phenomena like magic, esper abilities, and divine blessings, but cancels his own luck, causing chronic misfortune that manifests as daily inconveniences and life-threatening situations. His spiky black hair (achieved with hair gel) and typical school uniform—often worn unbuttoned over an orange T-shirt or white hoodie—give him a delinquent-like appearance misunderstood by others.
Bullies branded him a "god of pestilence" during childhood due to misfortunes attributed to him, culminating in an attempted stabbing and media exploitation. To protect him, his father enrolled him in Academy City, though his bad luck persisted. Before the series' events, Touma habitually aided others, preventing suicide attempts by Mitsuari Ayu and Shokuhou Misaki. During an encounter with Deadlock, he shielded Misaki, resulting in anterograde amnesia specific to her—any new memories involving her fade rapidly. He later suffered complete memory loss after a head injury, an event concealed from most characters. This reset his personality to a core instinct of unconditional altruism, though he consciously mimics pre-amnesia behaviors to avoid suspicion.
In *A Certain Scientific Railgun T*, Touma's role centers on the Daihasei Festival. He encounters Shokuhou Misaki while buying drinks with Misaka Mikoto; Misaki recognizes him, hinting at their obscured past. Later, Saten Ruiko lends him a protective charm during a race, which he accepts with his left hand to avoid negating its power. When Ruiko and Xochitl discuss the festival's disruptions targeting Mikoto, Touma overhears and rushes to intervene. He arrives at Exterior to find Mikoto transformed into a being of destructive energy. Partnering with Level 5 esper Sogiita Gunha, they battle her. Touma deduces her power source is external, making negation impossible without severing the connection. Gunha creates an opening for Touma to reach Mikoto, but upon contact, Imagine Breaker fails and his right arm is severed. This triggers eight ethereal dragons emerging from the stump, dismantling Mikoto's energy form and restoring her. His arm regenerates instantly. Afterward, he covers Mikoto with his jacket, advising collaborative change over solitary destruction. He later returns Ruiko's charm, thanking her.
Touma's combat style relies on opportunistic physical strikes and Imagine Breaker's negation, lacking formal martial training. His moral code prioritizes intervention to protect others regardless of personal cost, summarized as: "I don’t need a reason to save someone." This trait attracts numerous romantic interests, termed the "Kami-yan disease" or "Kamijou Harem" by peers, though he remains oblivious to most affections. Key relationships include:
- **Misaka Mikoto**: A primary love interest whose transformation he halts in *Railgun T*. Their dynamic evolves from adversarial encounters to mutual reliance, with Touma stabilizing her during emotional crises.
- **Shokuhou Misaki**: Shares a history obscured by his memory loss; she retains knowledge of their past while he forgets new interactions with her.
- **Saten Ruiko**: Their brief exchange during the festival underscores his conscientiousness in returning borrowed items.
Touma's latent power extends beyond Imagine Breaker. Severing his right arm releases draconic entities—initially one, later confirmed as eight or more—representing an "Invisible Demon" force feared by antagonists like Fiamma of the Right. These dragons manifest in crises, such as during Mikoto's transformation or against magic users like Aureolus Izzard. His resilience includes surviving fatal injuries, with regenerated limbs and resurrection after conflicts.
