Description
Maaya Awatsuki is a Level 3 esper at Tokiwadai Middle School and a member of its swimming team, sharing a close friendship with fellow swimmer Wannai Kinuho. The two are often seen together and room together in the School Garden dormitory. She possesses long, straight dark-blue hair with V-shaped bangs, violet eyes, and a slim build with a large bust. Her typical attire is the Tokiwadai school uniform with loose socks.
Her esper ability, "Float Dial," manipulates buoyancy and momentum at the quantum level. This allows her to walk on water without breaking surface tension, leap several meters high, reduce the effective weight of heavy objects for easier lifting, and alter the trajectory of airborne objects or people by negating their buoyancy. In combat, she uses Float Dial defensively to redirect attackers or offensively to disable mechanical threats like drones by forcing crashes. The ability has a range of several meters but requires concentration to sustain effects after initial application.
Personality-wise, Maaya displays consistent kindness, consideration, and forgiveness toward others' flaws. She respects upperclassmen and holds specialized knowledge about swimsuits from her swimming involvement. Her refined demeanor pairs with a cooperative spirit in team settings.
Her chronological involvement starts in the Level Upper arc, where she meets Misaka Mikoto during pool-cleaning duties and later models swimsuits. She reappears in the Poltergeist arc, attending the Tokiwadai Midsummer Festival at Kongou Mitsuko's invitation and expressing concern for Kongou after her hospitalization.
In the Silent Party arc, Maaya assists Kongou in apprehending a purse snatcher and aids in searching for Febrie at the Academy City Research Exhibition Assembly. She joins Kongou and Kinuho to confront Aritomi Haruki and STUDY Corporation's powered suits. During the climax, she combines Float Dial with Kongou's Aero Hand under the Sisters' calculations to launch the Ekaterina II mecha into the atmosphere.
Her role expands in season 3's Daihasei Festival arc, supporting Kongou after athletic events and participating in Balloon Hunter. When Kongou investigates amnesia affecting Mikoto's friends, Maaya retrieves Kongou's phone to contact a psychometer esper capable of reading a cat's memories. She later aids in rescuing Kongou from Yoshio Baba's robotic dogs, using Float Dial to neutralize nanomachine-carrying mosquitoes and counter Baba's tactics alongside Kinuho. This weakens Baba's defenses, enabling Mikoto to destroy his strongest robot.
Through these events, Maaya evolves from a peripheral schoolmate to a reliable combat supporter, leveraging her ability alongside allies like Kinuho and Kongou against Academy City threats.
