Description
Misaki Shokuhō stands as Academy City's fifth-ranked Level 5 esper and a prominent student at Tokiwadai Middle School, where she commands the largest faction under the alias "The Queen." Her striking appearance features cascades of long golden hair and matching golden eyes marked by distinctive star-shaped pupils, complemented by a developed figure contrasting her earlier physique. She consistently wears the Tokiwadai uniform accented with white lace-adorned gloves and stockings, and carries a signature shoulder bag displaying a star symbol. This bag houses remote controls essential for channeling her ability with precision.
Her formidable esper power, Mental Out, manipulates brain fluids and electrical signals to achieve telepathy, mind control, memory alteration, and sensory augmentation. She can command individuals in the triple digits for simple tasks or intricately control up to ten people simultaneously, with affected subjects exhibiting star-patterned eyes. Mental Out proves ineffective against non-humans, machines, and electromasters like Mikoto Misaka due to electromagnetic interference. While Misaki relies on her remotes for optimal precision, she can employ her ability without them at reduced efficacy. Specific applications include psychometry via touch, erecting mental blocks against external manipulation, and performing concept swaps—such as altering self-destruct codes.
Her past is defined by involvement in the Clone Dolly project. Researchers identified both her and Mitsuari Ayu as Level 5 candidates, but the Parameter List selected Misaki, relegating Ayu to backup status. During the subsequent Exterior Project, scientists harvested part of her cerebral cortex to create a device amplifying Mental Out's range and power. Tasked with befriending Dolly, a deteriorating clone reliant on life-support implants, Misaki formed a genuine bond before Dolly's predetermined death. This trauma drove her to overthrow the researchers, conceal the Exterior device, and develop profound mistrust. She later enrolled in Tokiwadai as a Level 5, initially outranking Mikoto.
A pivotal event occurred the year before the main story when Misaki met Kamijou Touma. Their shared summer activities included swimming, culminating in Touma gifting her a whistle to summon him if endangered. When attackers targeted her, Touma sustained severe injuries defending her. Misaki attempted to suppress his pain via Mental Out to aid medical treatment, but his low blood pressure caused a malfunction damaging his brain, rendering him unable to form or retain memories of her. Despite this, she retains romantic feelings, keeps the whistle, and strictly avoids using Mental Out on his mind. Though his Imagine Breaker negates her ability, she can bypass it for mental communication.
Her relationship with Mikoto is intensely antagonistic, fueled by clashing personalities, Mikoto's natural immunity to Mental Out, and parallels in their connection to Touma. Misaki initially resented Mikoto for unwittingly providing DNA used in the Sisters Project, which exploited clones like Dolly. However, during the Daihasei Festival, they form a temporary alliance against shared threats. When Gensei Kihara—an advocate of the terminated Level 6 Shift Project—targets the Misaka Network through Sister 10032, Misaki kidnaps the Sister for protection and erases memories of Mikoto from Kuroko Shirai, Kazari Uiharu, and Ruiko Saten to shield them. After confronting Mikoto, Misaki reveals Gensei's involvement, leading to a cooperative infiltration of his headquarters to thwart his plans.
Within Tokiwadai, Misaki engages in a rivalry with Gaouin Tsukasa during the student council election. She manipulates her faction to pressure Mikoto into supporting Gaouin, facing initial resistance. Misaki's fiercely loyal second-in-command, Junko Hokaze, owes her allegiance to Misaki using Mental Out to alleviate Junko's power-induced headaches despite personal risk. While Misaki values Junko, she occasionally exploits her position for minor pranks, like covertly compelling Junko to overeat sweets.
Personality-wise, Misaki presents a playful, eccentric facade characterized by whimsical poses and a pronounced sweet tooth, yet masks underlying cunning and deep-seated paranoia. She avoids public appearances, often employing proxies controlled by Mental Out, and distrusts anyone whose mind she cannot read. Though manipulative, she adheres to self-imposed ethical guidelines, ensuring the well-being of those under her control and avoiding lethal force. She is notably physically inept, easily fatigued by light exercise, and makes excuses such as blaming her bust size. Her speech features idiosyncrasies like appending "~ryoku" (~力, "power") to words, creating terms like "brainwashing power."
