Description
Mitori Kōzaku emerged during the Daihasei Festival arc. Her origins lie in the Clone Dolly project, where she served as a test subject alongside the prototype clone Dolly. Throughout this period, Kōzaku masked her true feelings with a facade of cheerfulness for the researchers, yet developed a genuine bond with Dolly, who affectionately nicknamed her "Mi-chan" or "Mii-chan." Discovering Dolly sustained by life-support and subjected to life-shortening experiments, Kōzaku confronted the researchers, threatening exposure. This resulted in her violent suppression and separation from Dolly. Learning the project's connection to Academy City's Board of Directors, specifically Chairman Aleister Crowley, solidified her desire for revenge against the city's leadership.
Dolly's death and the termination of the Exterior Project intensified Kōzaku's resentment. She later attended Kirigaoka Girls' Academy Middle School but was arrested following a failed terrorist attack targeting the Board Chairman's headquarters. Incarcerated in a reformatory, operatives working for Kihara Gensei secretly extracted her. Gensei exploited her hatred of Academy City, recruiting her as a liaison for MEMBER and tasking her with infiltrating the organization on his behalf. Official records were falsified to declare her deceased, erasing her public existence.
During the Daihasei Festival, acting on Gensei's orders to locate the Misaka Sisters, Kōzaku utilized her Liquid Shadow ability to create heavy liquid metal puppets. She deployed these constructs for surveillance, combat, and psychological manipulation. Targeting Misaka Mikoto, she took Kazari Uiharu and Misuzu Misaka hostage, attempting to leverage their safety to extract the Sisters' whereabouts. Her confrontation stemmed from viewing Mikoto as an "oddity" for living peacefully despite awareness of the city's unethical experiments. This encounter culminated in a battle with Shirai Kuroko, forcing Kōzaku's retreat. Her subsequent investigation identified Shokuhou Misaki as the perpetrator behind attacks on MEMBER facilities, though Gensei had anticipated this revelation.
Kōzaku continued pursuing Gensei's objectives, including monitoring Saten Ruiko's investigation into a liquid metal factory. When Saten infiltrated the facility, Kōzaku's puppet attempted her capture. This action exposed a rift within MEMBER, as operative Xochitl identified Kōzaku as a traitor for serving Gensei over the Board of Directors. Kōzaku disengaged after warning Xochitl to flee the city.
Her character displays a paradoxically cheerful demeanor masking deep-seated cynicism and bitterness. She resents individuals who ignore Academy City's dark side while benefiting from its systems. Loyalty to Dolly remained her consistent motivator, driving vengeful actions. Following her defeat and a later reunion with Dolly, she aligned with Shokuhou Misaki as an informant. This shift coincided with an attire change from a punk-styled nurse uniform to a black blazer with a white shirt and skirt, reflecting her transition away from direct antagonism.
Her primary ability, Liquid Shadow (Level 4), grants precise control over liquids with a specific gravity of 20 or higher, typically manifested as liquid metal. She constructs puppets capable of wielding weapons, defends against conventional attacks, and perceives surroundings via skull-shaped cameras or echolocation. She can generate wings, horns, and tails for close combat ("Devil Girl") and manipulate metal clouds for large-scale assaults. She also utilized external tools: the Exterior device to access Shokuhou Misaki's Mental Out ability and a Relic granting "Absolute Leaf," which consumes esper powers to generate Shadow Metal, lowers temperatures, and causes spatial distortions.
