Description
Fumihiko Makabe commands the Alvis organization, assuming leadership after the previous commander's death early in the conflict. He is the father of Kazuki Makabe and widower of Akane Makabe, his late wife who held a superior military rank. Years prior, Akane died shielding him from Festum assimilation; following her death, he adopted her surname and raised Kazuki alone. This loss profoundly altered his worldview, transforming his initial advocacy for total war against the Festum into a focus on protection and minimizing youth in combat.

He balances his command duties with running a small ceramics workshop adjoining their home, crafting traditional Japanese clay pots for income. This domestic endeavor sharply contrasts his military role, reflecting his dual identity as both caregiver and strategist. Despite the emotional strain of deploying his son into battle, he maintains outward composure to offer Kazuki stability and reassurance. He recognizes the capabilities of younger individuals like Soushi Minashiro, depending on them to support Kazuki during missions.

Throughout the Dead Aggressor arc, he oversees Tatsumiyajima Island's defense, making critical decisions during Festum incursions. He monitors Kazuki's initial combat engagement and later consults medical officer Chizuru Toomi regarding his son's physical condition post-battle. Private moments, such as sharing meals with Kazuki or reviewing a family photo album while apologizing to Akane's memory, reveal his personal grief and enduring sense of responsibility.

During the events of Exodus, he commands Alvis during confrontations with external forces like the Human Army. He authorizes cautious cooperation with them to rescue endangered civilians, demonstrating strategic pragmatism. His leadership includes approving advanced Fafner deployments and facilitating meetings between key figures like Miwa Hino and Emery Almond, acknowledging their importance in deciphering Festum-human dynamics.

By The Beyond timeline, his physical condition deteriorates significantly, necessitating a crutch for mobility. He commands the Fifth Operation Azure aboard the R-Boat, a pivotal mission to reclaim their homeland. When the operation fails, he emphasizes the critical need for recovery efforts to avert global catastrophe, sustaining his decisive authority despite failing health.

His surname Makabe combines "真" (truth/genuine) and "壁" (wall), while Fumihiko blends "史" (history) and "彦" (boy/prince).
