Description
Misao Kurusu is a character introduced in the film Soukyuu no Fafner: Heaven and Earth, which takes place two years after the original television series. He appears as a young boy discovered sleeping inside a red crystal within an unmanned submarine that drifts into Tatsumiya Bay. His true identity is a Sphinx-type Festum, a rare among natural Festum who has developed a unique personality and near-complete individuality, allowing him to take on a human appearance.

In terms of personality, Misao is notably more expressive and talkative than most Festum encountered before him. He possesses a childlike and pure nature, initially lacking clear concepts of good and evil, which often leaves the human characters uncertain of his intentions. He is capable of appreciating simple human experiences, such as the beauty of the sky—a realization that marks him as the first Festum to understand that ordinary emotion. This appreciation and his growing empathy for humans are central to his character.

Misao’s motivations are shaped by his role as a messenger from the Mir, the collective consciousness of the Festum. He arrives on Tatsumiya Island claiming to have been sent by Soushi Minashiro to negotiate peace between humans and Festum. However, his proposal is framed as an unconditional surrender, which creates tension. Over the course of the story, Misao becomes torn between two conflicting desires: the urge to eliminate the source of pain for his kind—the cores of Tatsumiya Island and the humans responsible—and his unwillingness to fight the people of Tatsumiya, whose emotions he has come to understand and value.

His role in the story is pivotal. Misao’s arrival reignites hostilities between the Human Army and the Festum, forcing the Fafner pilots into their most desperate battle yet. Despite his initial ambiguity, he eventually cooperates with the island’s forces, piloting the Fafner Mark Dreizehn Kai, nicknamed Chronos. With Misao on board, the unit gains a special ability to slow down reality, which he uses during the Fifth Operation Azure to break through barriers and defeat enemies.

Key relationships include his connection to Soushi, whose knowledge and name Misao uses to define his own identity. The name Kurusu Misao is a human-language interpretation created with Soushi’s knowledge, meaning something like a coming savior or bringer of noble values for the Festum. Misao also forms a bond with Kazuki Makabe, through repeated dialogue and mutual understanding, and develops a respectful relationship with Yoko Hazama, as shown when he tells her he will cherish the Fafner, indicating that he has grasped the concept of consideration for human hearts.

Throughout the film, Misao undergoes significant development. He begins as an enigmatic and almost alien figure, but through interactions with the people of Tatsumiya, he grows to appreciate human emotions and the complexity of coexistence. His final actions show a willingness to sacrifice his own existence for the sake of peace between the two races. His struggle between his loyalty to the Mir and his newfound empathy for humans defines his arc.

In terms of notable abilities, as a Sphinx-type Festum, Misao can read minds, communicate telepathically, and assume a human replica body that lacks chromosomes. When piloting the Fafner, his presence enhances the mech’s performance, granting a temporal manipulation ability that allows him to slow the perception of time. He is also able to appear in the dreams of others, as seen when he forcibly crosses with Kazuki before his physical arrival on the island.
