Description
Miwa Hino is the daughter of Yumiko Hino and the late Michio Hino. She was born on Tatsumiya Island as the first child conceived naturally after genetic contamination had rendered most Japanese people infertile, making her a symbol of hope for the islanders. Her father died before she was born, so she was raised solely by her mother, who treasures her as a reason to keep living.
From a very young age, Miwa exhibits an unusually precocious appearance and shows signs of being a new kind of human. She can unconsciously predict events through drawings in her sketchbook and naturally understands the group language of the Festum, the silicon-based alien life forms that humanity has been fighting. This ability stems from her birth to parents who both carried Festum factors, which also causes her physical growth to proceed at an abnormally fast rate. In reality, she is in constant cross-communication with the Mir of the island, making her essentially equal to that Mir in nature. When she interacts with another Mir, such as the one belonging to Misao Kurusu, she can exchange vast amounts of complex information using unknown infinite numbers in mere minutes, describing this process as having a conversation. For the Alvis organization, which has long sought ways to coexist with the Festum, she represents a new hope.
Her mother, Yumiko, is deeply protective and fears that Miwa will be taken away and used for the island's purposes, a fear that later leads to further conflict. Despite her young age, Miwa is a central figure in efforts to bridge humanity and the Festum. In the period depicted in Behind the Line, she is already recognized for her unique connection to the Festum and her potential to guide a more peaceful path forward. As she grows older, she becomes a pilot of the Fafner Mark Sein, but she consistently favors nonviolent solutions, using her Esperanto-like powers to ask Festum to stand down whenever possible, and she dislikes resorting to force. Her role is that of a mediator who embodies the possibility of understanding and coexistence in a world torn apart by war. Her mother is her primary emotional anchor, and through her actions, she gradually influences the course of the conflict, offering a different way to engage with the enemy.
