Description
Maris Excelsior, an Esperanto traveler from the land of Ashoka's first birth to Wadatsumijima, obsesses over his power to control others, driven by a gnawing dread of the future and a craving for a place severed from the world. This fear compels his actions, leading him to initially align with the citizens of Tatsumiyajima only to betray them. His betrayal involves abducting Soushi Minashiro, defecting to the Benon faction, and stealing the Fafner unit Specter.
Piloting the Mark Zwei Kai, nicknamed Grimreaper, Maris accompanies Soushi and two other children toward a rocket during Operation Azure as battle erupts outside. He calms Soushi's fear by putting him to sleep, carrying him aboard. Expressing happiness at finally launching Prometheus into space, he converses with Serenoa, Legato, and Floro, promising Floro their reunion. During the ascent, Prometheus reveals its new identity as Marespero, meaning despair, which Maris acknowledges. He declares that living in their hoped-for world necessitates another's death and accurately predicts Miwa Hino's inability to shoot down the rocket.
Reaching their destination, Maris is present as Floro finds Soushi, laughing during their argument. He reminds Soushi to prepare for a festival and questions the arrival of a Benon warship. He joins the group meeting Serenoa and Legato at the harbor and attends a dinner discussing Benon and the outside world. Maris warns Soushi about the dangers of contacting the outside world due to Esperanto forces and declines to intrude on family time. Later, he observes the ocean and suggests Miwa should come to the island.
At the festival, Maris voices a wish for eternal peace on the island. When Tatsumiyajima pilots attack to destroy this perceived false paradise, he boards the Grimreaper to engage Misao Kurusu and his Festum allies. During the battle, Serenoa informs him of Floro's disappearance and orders a retreat as the island collapses. Maris asserts they should have eliminated the attackers earlier.
Aboard Benon's mothership, Maris touches a red crystal to enter Rina Nishio's consciousness, where she greets him in a mental projection of a shop. His quest for stability through control and isolation culminates in an alliance with forces intent on reshaping the world at a grave cost.
