Mayoi Ayasato, known as Maya Fey in some regions, is a spirit medium of the Fey clan and the younger sister of defense attorney Mia Fey. She spent her early life in Kurain Village, training to master the Kurain Channeling Technique. Her father died during her childhood, and her mother, Misty Fey, vanished in disgrace after the DL-6 Incident when Mayoi was two years old. Her sister Mia subsequently departed to search for their mother, leaving Mayoi under the care of their aunt, Morgan Fey, and the village. Mia stayed in contact and sometimes relied on Mayoi to protect critical evidence for her cases. On September 5, 2016, Mayoi received a call from her sister about evidence and went to Mia’s office, where she found her sister’s body and was accused of the murder. Phoenix Wright, Mia’s protégé, defended her in court. During the trial, Mayoi channeled Mia’s spirit, whose testimony helped identify the true culprit. After her acquittal, Mayoi appointed herself as Wright’s assistant at his new law office. In her role as assistant, Mayoi joined investigations and offered co-counsel during trials. Her spiritual abilities enabled her to channel Mia for guidance, though initially her powers were limited and she could sustain the channeling only briefly. She also gave Wright her magatama, which allowed him to perceive Psyche-Locks—visual representations of concealed secrets. Months into working with Wright, Mayoi felt she had become a burden without stronger channeling skills and resolved to return to Kurain Village to continue her training. She left a note for Wright, but he intercepted her before she boarded her train and persuaded her of her importance to him. Still, she chose to go back to the village. After six months in Kurain, Mayoi was approached by Dr. Turner Grey, who asked her to channel the spirit of a deceased nurse. She agreed on the condition that Wright be present. The request, however, was a scheme by her aunt Morgan Fey and an accomplice to frame her for murder. After being knocked unconscious and hidden, Mayoi was again accused of murder and defended by Wright, who proved her innocence. Later, Mayoi was abducted by the assassin Shelly de Killer, who demanded Wright obtain a not guilty verdict for his client, Matt Engarde, in return for her life. While captive, she channeled Mia to signal her safety to Wright and tried to escape. She was rescued after Wright revealed Engarde’s guilt and de Killer terminated their contract. In subsequent cases with Wright during this period, Mayoi continued to aid in investigations and trials, which included briefly working as a waitress and testifying as a witness in unrelated proceedings. After these events, Mayoi did not appear physically for some time but was referenced by other characters. She later sent Wright a letter of encouragement during a challenging case years afterward. Mayoi eventually reappeared after a long absence, having traveled to the Kingdom of Khura’in to advance her spirit medium training. Now older, she had refined her channeling ability. During a ritual in Khura’in, she was accused of murdering a priest and another individual, but Wright once again defended her successfully. Beyond the main series, Mayoi has featured in other media. She collaborated with Phoenix Wright, Hershel Layton, and Luke Triton to solve cases involving witch trials and to rescue a young girl accused of witchcraft. She also appeared alongside Wright as a paired unit in other video games, where they used their combined skills in combat. Mayoi is optimistic, excitable, friendly, and curious. She is an ardent fan of the Steel Samurai television series. Her preferred food is hamburgers in most international versions, though it is ramen in the original Japanese release. Despite a occasionally childlike exuberance, she is tenacious and profoundly loyal to her friends. As a member of the Fey clan, her main ability is spirit channeling, which lets her serve as a vessel for the dead; the spirits assume their original appearance while using her body. She also owns a magatama bead that can reveal hidden secrets. Her family consists of her mother, Misty Fey; her sister, Mia Fey; her aunt, Morgan Fey; and her cousins, including Pearl Fey, Dahlia Hawthorne, and Iris.
