Description
Nicky Larson, the central protagonist of the anime City Hunter, is a private detective and mercenary operating in the Shinjuku district of Tokyo. His background is marked by tragedy: at the age of three, he was the sole survivor of a plane crash in Central America. He was taken in and raised by local guerrilla fighters, growing up in a war-torn environment where he was trained in combat and weaponry from childhood. After the conflict ended, he worked as a hired gun in the United States before eventually settling in Japan, where he became a legendary figure in the underground underworld.

Personality-wise, Nicky Larson is a study in contrasts. On the surface, he is an incorrigible womanizer, driven by an extreme and comedic obsession with beautiful women. He constantly flirts, attempts to seduce, and pursues female clients, which often leads to humorous conflicts with his partner. However, beneath this frivolous exterior lies a highly skilled, deadly serious professional. When a mission requires it, he can switch instantly to a focused and ruthless operative. He is generally carefree, financially irresponsible, and enjoys drinking and partying, yet he adheres to a strong personal moral code. He will not take a job that violates his principles, and he shows deep respect for life, particularly after the death of his first partner.

His motivations stem from a desire to protect the innocent and uphold justice in his own way. Originally a mercenary who killed without hesitation, he gradually shifts toward a more restrained approach, using lethal force only when absolutely necessary. This change is largely driven by his partnership with Laura Marconi, whose innocence he wishes to preserve. He works as a "sweeper" — a fixer for problems that cannot be solved by conventional means — and his services are requested by writing the letters "XYZ" on a message board at Shinjuku Station.

Nicky Larson's role in the story is that of the city's unofficial guardian, taking on a wide range of cases from bodyguard duty to dismantling criminal syndicates. He operates from a modest apartment, which he shares with his partner, and his day-to-day life is a blend of action, comedy, and developing romance.

Key relationships define his journey. The most important is with Laura Marconi, the younger sister of his late partner Hideyuki (Tony Marconi). After Hideyuki is murdered by a crime syndicate, Nicky Larson takes Laura under his wing, and she becomes his new partner and assistant. Their relationship is central to the series: a slow-burning, unspoken romance marked by Laura's frequent jealousy and her use of a giant hammer to keep his lecherous tendencies in check. Hideyuki himself was Nicky Larson's first partner in Japan, a former policeman whose death motivates much of the early story. Another significant figure is Mammouth, a massive, heavily armed mercenary who is both a rival and a friend. They share a past as guerrilla fighters, and Mammouth is one of the few people who knows Nicky Larson's hidden history. Their relationship is built on mutual respect and competition. Saeko Nogami, a beautiful and influential police officer, serves as a recurring contact, often hiring Nicky Larson for police-related tasks in exchange for favors, though she rarely delivers on her promises.

Development is a gradual process across the series. Nicky Larson starts as a man haunted by a violent past, shaped by a childhood of warfare and drug experiments (forcibly administered a combat-enhancing drug by his adoptive father figure). Over time, his connection with Laura and his growing network of allies softens his hardened edges. He learns to value partnership over solitude and begins to confront his own traumatic history, including the loss of his mentor and the discovery of his true origins. His character evolves from a lone wolf killer into a more compassionate, though still mischievous, protector.

Notable abilities are extraordinary. Nicky Larson is a peerless marksman, especially with his signature weapon: a Colt Python.357 Magnum revolver. He can perform seemingly impossible shots, such as firing two bullets in rapid succession to penetrate reinforced glass without triggering an alarm. He is also a master of hand-to-hand combat, trained from childhood in guerrilla warfare, and highly proficient in tactics and strategy. His combat skills are so feared that even the largest criminal organizations treat him with caution. Despite his flamboyant personality, his reputation as a "city sweeper" is built on a foundation of lethal efficiency and unwavering reliability.
