Description
Hanae Ashiya, a high school student, gains the ability to perceive yokai after an encounter with the fluffy white spirit Fuzzy, whose possession triggers a severe illness. This crisis drives him to seek aid from Haruitsuki Abeno, binding him to repay a debt through employment at the Mononokean—a teahouse specializing in yokai exorcism. His role evolves from mere debt repayment to a self-driven mission to foster empathy between humans and yokai.
Standing 170 cm tall, he sports dark blue hair and light blue eyes, frequently clad in a school uniform: a white shirt, yellow vest, red tie, and black pants. His cheerful, empathetic demeanor contrasts with a panicky impulsiveness, often perceived as childlike. Though inexperienced, he balances naivety with tenacity and a moral compass favoring compassion over rigid rules.
Abilities include a latent sixth sense for detecting yokai, the inherited "Influence" power to subdue spirits via an oppressive aura, and an instinct for locating metal objects. Notable stamina allows prolonged physical exertion, while gradual training hones skills like targeted yokai-sensing. Temporary losses of yokai vision, often following self-sacrifices, are reversed each time, restoring his capabilities.
Raised by his florist mother Nara, Hanae knows little of his absent father Sakae—a former Mononokean employee under Aoi. Later revelations tie Sakae’s lingering resentment toward yokai to Hanae’s sporadic possession episodes, with Hanae inheriting his father’s "Influence." Reconciliation with this legacy involves understanding Sakae’s conflicted yokai relationships and embracing his own destiny within the Mononokean.
His dynamic with Abeno blends mutual respect with friction, as Abeno critiques his immaturity yet admires his unorthodox methods. Fuzzy’s initial nuisance role shifts to devoted companionship, reflecting Hanae’s kindness. He mediates conflicts like Zenko Fujiwara’s family strife and Yahiko’s hostility, while engagements with Underworld entities—the Legislator, Justice, and anti-human Gyōsei—showcase his rising clout in confronting systemic threats.
Growth arcs include conquering self-doubt, honing powers, and reconciling familial history. Pivotal moments involve sacrificing his sight to aid a yokai before regaining it, thwarting Gyōsei’s plots, and resolving cases like Kinako’s and Nobou’s through empathy. Temporarily surrendering his abilities to save Aoi hints at their eventual resurgence, cementing his role as a bridge between worlds.
