Description
Haruitsuki Abeno is a primary character who serves as the current master of the Mononokean, a mysterious tea room that acts as a gateway between the human world and the underworld. He is a first-year high school student, often surprising people with his maturity and his position, as he handles the significant responsibility of guiding lost yōkai back to their realm.

Abeno possesses a notably stern, short-tempered, and cynical personality, often coming across as rude or aloof, particularly in his early interactions with his employee, Hanae Ashiya. This demeanor is largely a result of his past; having grown up with the ability to see yōkai, he faced disbelief and disdain from humans, leading him to favor the company of spirits. He holds a firm belief that helping yōkai is more important than helping humans. His reasoning is that yōkai are inherently lonely and vulnerable in the human world where few can see them, whereas humans, if in trouble, have many others who can come to their aid. Despite his gruff exterior, he is consistently polite to his clients, the yōkai who seek his help, and he demonstrates a capacity for deep care and kindness, which becomes more apparent as the series progresses.

His core motivation is his dedication to the Mononokean and its duties, a role he inherited under tragic circumstances. He was trained from the age of seven by the previous master, a yōkai named Aoi. Unfounded rumors in the demon world claim that Abeno killed Aoi to take his place, but the truth is that Aoi was lost to a parasitic infection, and Abeno was the last one to see him. This event and his solitary upbringing have left a profound mark on him, and much of his actions are driven by a sense of responsibility and a stated principle that "everything I do is for Aoi".

In the story, Abeno acts as both employer and mentor to Hanae Ashiya. After exorcising a yōkai that was clinging to Ashiya, Abeno hires the boy as a part-time employee to work off the massive debt incurred by the exorcism. This begins a central partnership that evolves from a purely transactional arrangement into a genuine and mutual friendship. Ashiya’s cheerful, empathetic, and persistent nature gradually challenges Abeno’s biases against humans, compelling him to be more open and to acknowledge the value of bridging both worlds. Abeno becomes fiercely protective of Ashiya, risking his own well-being and using his most dangerous powers to save him from threats, even defying powerful beings in the underworld.

Other key relationships further define his character. He shares a complex, duty-bound dynamic with Rippō, the Legislator of the underworld, who oversees his work. Though frequently annoyed by Rippō’s lazy and casual attitude, Abeno respects the authority of the underworld's laws. A significant childhood connection is with Yahiko, a fox yōkai he befriended when he was lost in a forest for three days as a child. Though he initially forgot this encounter, their reunion reinforces his deep ties to the yōkai world. His decision to reluctantly accept the small, adorable yōkai Fuzzy as an employee of the Mononokean also serves to highlight the underlying, nurturing nature he hides beneath his morose facade.

Throughout the series, Abeno shows notable development, shifting from a state of willful isolation towards emotional openness. He becomes more willing to acknowledge his own feelings, such as guilt over past failures or gratitude towards Ashiya, and his ability to apologize and express vulnerability marks significant growth from his initially cold and detached disposition.

Abeno possesses a range of notable spiritual abilities. His primary duty involves summoning the Mononokean and opening portals to the underworld, a task he can only perform twice per day, as it severely drains his energy and is the reason he is frequently seen sleeping in class. He has the ability to sense the presence of yōkai from great distances. His most formidable power is known as "Influence" or Ikou, a rare and immense spiritual authority that allows him to completely subdue a yōkai, forcing it into a state of submission. This power is a double-edged sword, however, as it has the potential to kill a spirit. Because of this risk and his inherent respect for yōkai, Abeno is extremely reluctant to use it, only doing so in dire situations, such as when Ashiya's life is threatened by the powerful Executive of the underworld, whom he forces back into his human form.
