Princess Karulawaturei of Larmanionu (also called Na-Tunku or Na Tuunk) was deposed by the Shakukopolu faction and enslaved as a Na-Kuan (Sword Slave). Her captors held attendant Emushiri hostage to force her compliance as a combatant. Following Emushiri's death, Karulau slaughtered her enslavers and escaped. Discovered by Tuskur soldiers after a shipwreck, she abandoned her royal title to live simply as "Karulau" (often shortened to Karura), swearing loyalty to Hakuowlo and serving as a warrior in his forces. She perpetually wears a thick metal collar with a broken chain, symbolizing her rejection of royalty and choice to remain Karulau.
Karura possesses dark blue eyes, fair skin, and distinctive cat-like ears and tail. Her attire typically consists of a burgundy one-piece outfit with a white stripe, a red-and-brown cloak trimmed in white, secured by a white belt. She wields a massive, custom-made black sword designed to never dull or break, which she lifts effortlessly due to superhuman strength; few others can lift it, though woptors can carry it. Discarding this sword drastically heightens her speed, revealing it functions as a physical limiter.
Exhibiting an easygoing yet assertive personality, Karura frequently engages in playful teasing and pranks, especially targeting Touka. She openly flirts with Hakuowlo, invading his personal space, while rejecting advances from others like Kurou. She constantly carries a jug of sake, displaying high alcohol tolerance even during battles. Despite her lightheartedness, she harbors trauma from her enslavement and Emushiri's death. In youth, her arrogance and callousness alienated potential friends like Ulthury.
Her character evolves significantly. She forges a close bond with Hakuowlo, implied to sense his true identity as Uitsualnemetia. During the Na Tuunk slave revolt, she made a sacred vow of eternal devotion to him, binding herself through a contract with this entity. After Hakuowlo's sealing, she and Touka became traveling mercenaries. By the events of *Mask of Deception* and *Mask of Truth*, she runs the Hakurou-kaku inn in Yamato's capital with Touka, using it as a cover to gather intelligence for the resistance via a secret tunnel to the palace, demonstrating maturity while retaining her teasing nature.
Karura helped raise Kuon as one of Hakuowlo's caretakers but insists Kuon call her "big sister," reacting with wrath to "mother." She interacts with Haku (protagonist of *Mask of Deception/Truth*), noting his resemblance to Hakuowlo and trusting him to protect Kuon. Her relationship with Touka shifts from initial hostility to camaraderie after Touka defects to Hakuowlo's side. Her childhood dynamic with Ulthury evolves from mutual dislike to friendship through shared experiences.
In *Lost Flag*, versions "Marebito Karulau" and "Young Karulau" appear. The younger iteration encounters her older self and disapproves of her drunken demeanor. A key storyline reveals Emushiri's spirit resides within Karulau's sword due to her contract with Uitsualnemetia, allowing a reunion during the "Light of Sword Slave" event. Her brother Derihourai becomes ruler of their homeland, renamed Karulawaturei in her honor.
