Tōma Kamijō is a high school student living in Academy City, officially registered as a Level 0 esper with no psychic talent. His most defining trait is the Imagine Breaker, an ability residing in his right hand that nullifies all supernatural phenomena—including magic, esper powers, and divine blessings—upon contact. This power also cancels his own luck, condemning him to a life of perpetual misfortune.
His childhood was shadowed by superstition and hostility from those who blamed his inherent misfortune for their troubles, branding him a "god of pestilence." After a bankrupt man tried to stab him, resulting in unwanted media attention, his father sent him to Academy City for safety and a more tolerant environment. This relocation was later uncovered as a deliberate scheme by Aleister Crowley to draw him into the city.
Among his classmates, he is considered precious because his presence draws away their collective minor misfortunes. Yet his inexplicable tendency to attract female attention often stirs resentment among male peers. He has not formed any serious romantic relationships. Academically, he requires remedial lessons due to his Level 0 status, though he displays quick thinking in combat and a firm understanding of physics.
He is driven by a powerful, instinctive urge to help anyone in need, regardless of risk or reason. This selfless nature persists even after he loses all his memories while protecting Index, though the amnesia forces him to act more cautiously in social situations to hide his condition. He holds no grudges against former enemies and will aid them if asked. He does not hesitate to confront female opponents who harm innocents, such as Sherry Cromwell or Vento of the Front.
Key relationships shape his path. He acts as unofficial guardian for Index, a nun who possesses 103,000 grimoires in her memory, though their dynamic is strained by her possessive, sometimes abusive behavior and his poor choice of words. His bond with Misaka Mikoto, one of the city’s most powerful espers, begins when he aids her and grows into a complex connection where she develops feelings he remains largely unaware of. He also shares a significant but tragically forgotten history with Shokuhou Misaki, whose new memories of him are constantly erased due to a unique form of amnesia linked to her.
The Imagine Breaker holds its own mysteries and limits. It cannot negate the natural aftermath of supernatural events and offers no defense against conventional weapons. If his right arm is severed, a powerful entity manifesting as multiple dragons—known as Dragon Strike—emerges temporarily, an ability feared even by beings like Fiamma of the Right. The true nature of Imagine Breaker is speculated to be a reference point for the world, existing long before his birth.
He serves as a wild card in conflicts, unaligned with any major faction. His actions are driven solely by the immediate desire to save those before him, often disrupting grander schemes. Figures like Aleister Crowley and Leivinia Birdway have noted his potential to achieve great things or cause great disaster, with Birdway labeling his self-sacrificing nature as insanity. His journey involves resisting manipulation by those who seek to use him, though he continually reaffirms his commitment to helping others unconditionally.
A significant inner conflict stems from the guilt of concealing his amnesia from Index and others. During World War III, Fiamma of the Right exploits this secret to weaken his resolve, though he later regains his confidence. His personal philosophy revolves around accepting his misfortune, believing it allows him to notice and aid those who suffer—a path he consciously chooses.
In appearance, he looks like an ordinary student, with spiky black hair styled using gel as his most striking feature. He usually wears his school uniform with an unbuttoned jacket over an orange T-shirt, leading some to mistake him for a delinquent. On weekends, he dresses casually.
Throughout his experiences, including in non-canon side stories, he has shown an interest in reading weekly shonen manga. His name carries alternative readings with significant meaning: "神浄討魔" (One Who Purifies God and Slays Demons), "神上" (Above God), and "透魔" (Invisible Demon), the last of which hints at the power within his arm.
