Anju, Princess and heir of Yamato, is genetically engineered from the template of the Mikado's deceased human daughter, Chii. She possesses long black hair usually braided into twin tails, yellow eyes, and distinctive snow leopard-like ears and tail. This delicate appearance contrasts sharply with her immense physical strength, surpassing most characters and rivaling figures like Kuon. Formally, Anju displays seriousness and wisdom, yet among trusted companions reveals a cheerful, kind, and notably childish nature. Her deep curiosity about life beyond the palace often drives reckless actions: sneaking out unsupervised, consuming others' food without permission, or causing disruptions in places like the Hakurokaku inn. These incidents frequently lead to disciplinary interventions from her guardian, Munechika, one of Yamato's Eight Pillar Generals. Anju holds profound admiration for Oshtor, who introduced her to the world outside the imperial court. A pivotal confrontation with Kuon, the Princess of Tuskur—who once taunted her fitness to rule—forges Anju's unbreakable resolve to defend her people firsthand. While adversity strengthens her determination, moments of intense rage surface, such as during the Battle of Rumoy Pass upon witnessing mass soldier casualties. Following her father the Mikado's assassination, Anju is poisoned via tainted tea, leaving her physically weakened and vocally impaired. Rescued by Kuon and Jachdwalt, she is taken to Ennakamuy for safety and recovery. During convalescence, she remains under the care of Oshtor, unaware he is actually Haku impersonating the deceased general after the real Oshtor perished battling Vurai. Learning of an imposter princess installed in Yamato by traitorous generals deepens her resolve; Oshtor (Haku) pledges to restore her throne. A critical moment comes when Haku procures specialized medicine from the merchant Chikinaro, accelerating her healing. However, news of Haku's alleged death triggers profound grief, momentarily shattering her resolve until Oshtor's reaffirmed loyalty renews her commitment to reclaim Yamato. Anju evolves into a symbol of resistance during the civil war. At Oshtor's urging, she addresses Ennakamuy's demoralized troops, delivering an impassioned speech that galvanizes them despite her initial trepidation about the bloodshed committed in her name. She actively participates in key conflicts, including the defense against Dekopompo's invasion and the strategic taunting that lures him into a fatal trap. Her intervention halts a duel between Mikazuchi and Oshtor, showcasing growing authority. Witnessing Oshtor's transformation via the Akuruka mask during this confrontation further hardens her resolve. After reclaiming Yamato and ascending as Empress, Anju renounces a secluded imperial life. She travels the land alongside Munechika, Mikazuchi, and Kiwru to directly aid her subjects. To maintain stability, Shinonon serves as her decoy in the capital, supported by Jachwaldt and Ougi. This choice reflects her matured understanding of leadership and connection to the people. Her foundational relationship with Munechika endures; the general acts as her disciplinarian, caretaker, and unwavering protector, often resorting to physical correction like spankings for Anju's mischief. Despite this, they share moments of levity, bonding over romantic literature and illustrations provided by Rulutieh.
